Baby Names

Nickname Potential

Hi everyone! I'm new to this board (can't believe I only just saw it here actually) but I have a thing for names and we just found out we're expecting baby number 2 :)

Our top pick for a girl is Octavia, but the first thing people say when they hear it is: "But what are people going to call her? Octo?" (follow with dim-witted laughter).

I prefer Tavi or Tavia as nicknames, but do you think you could possibly create Ava from Octavia? Is that just too far removed? I'm trying to give her options as I understand Octavia might be a lot of name for a little girl.

Re: Nickname Potential

  • You could also call her Octavia.  I am an Elizabeth, another four-syllable name, and I went by it until I was about 15.  I think Octavia is a gorgeous name as it is!

  • How about Avia (AY-vee-ah)? I knew a girl named Genavia who went by that.

This is what came to my mind, too.  Or Avie (like the letters A-V)  Ava isn't too far of a stretch, really.

  • Octavia is really great name that I am not cool enough to use. I like Tavi or Avie and honestly I think you could get Ava out of it, but I like the other options better.

  • Yes, I think Ava will work as a NN.

  • I think Ava would work, but IMO Octavia is a beautiful name & is what I would call her.

  • Octavia is beautiful!  I am pretty loose with NN's   afterall they are supposed to differ from your formal name otherwise why have them?  Ava would totally fit.. Tavia would be cute too   lots of potential
  • Kudos to you - great name.  I think I'd just wait and see what came naturally, but something like Tavia, Avia, Ava, etc. will probably work.

  • I don't think every name NEEDS a NN. I do like Tavi as a nickname, though.
  • Thanks everyone :) I would definitely prefer her to not have a nickname, but I live in Australia where everyone gets one whether they like it or not. For instance, my name is Lauren, which is pretty nickname-proof, but I get called Loz or Lozza all the time (which I really hate). At least the nicknames for Octavia are attractive and she can have fun 'playing' with her name if she wants.

  • I think Ava could work, but I think Avie is so much cuter! Actually, it's kind of making me want to add this to my long list. ;)
