Re: solids
We haven't started solids yet, but I think when we do, I'll do his one 'solids' meal about an hour after his afternoon bottle. That way he'll still be hungry for his feed before bedtime. When we move to two, I'll probably do solids an hour after his second bottle, and again in early evening.
Curious if others have tips.
This is what we are doing. He gets solids after his 1 pm bottle and again after his 7 pm bottle just before bed. We haven't attempted breakfast yet, simply because I don't have the time
We do solids after his first bottle of the morning and then again after his 4pm feeding. He has been eating only rice cereal but we started peas which we ended as it constipated him. So we have now moved on to apples. So far so good.
Good luck and be sure to video tape their first feeding the faces they make are soooo funny!
I'm probably going to get severely flamed but my DS would freak out at around 4 1/2 months when he'd see us eating. So, we started him on solids pretty early. We started at 3 tbs of some sort of fruit/veggie. Now (keep in mind, he's a little food monster!) he is having
8am; 1 - 6 oz bottle of formula w/oatmeal yogurt cereal when he wakes
10am; 1 - 6 oz bottle of formula
12pm; 1 - 6 oz bottle of plain formula
2pm; 1/2 - 1 can of fruit (usually banana or a fruit mix) & 4oz bottle of formula
5pm; 1/2 - 1 can of a veggie & 4 oz bottle of formula
8pm; his sleepy-time bottle...... 6 oz of formula & rice cereal
Hmm... I feed him BEFORE his bottle... is that wrong?
Currently we do oatmeal for breakkie and fruit for dinner.. but we just started. Tomorrow we are starting with 2 things at each sitting (a fruit and veggie)
I guess that its not wrong if that works for you. The way I see it, what ever gets them to eat is good.
This can lead to a decrease in formula/bm consumption which is why it's suggested to do it AFTER they take their milk. The solids aren't for nutritional purposes so it's very important that they maintain the appropriate amount of oz. of bm/formula.
We just started dabbling with solids this week. She takes her milk at 6:30/10:30/2:30/6:30 (8 oz each) So far, I've only given her one meal, and it's been after her 10:30 bottle (about 45 min-an hour after). No oatmeal. So far, she's had bananas and avocados and today was a mix!
Oh, and I think it's important to GO SLOW! Don't rush this process. Solids are rough on babies tummy and getting them to eat more than a tablespoon when you are first start is going to do a # on the digestive system. Go slow. Start with one fruit for a couple of days, then move on to another.
This is a really helpful link for the 4-6 set.
