2nd Trimester

Baby name HELP! (drama, long)

Ok in a little more than 2 weeks I will hopefully be able to find out the gender of my baby. There is one reason why I am wanting it to be a girl....

If it is a boy we are going to follow my DH family tradition. My DH is a 4th.. so that would make my son be a 5th.. My DH wants to continue the tradition so I am game for it.

The only problem is, if it IS a boy I do not want to call my son and my husband the same name. The first and middle name will be Edwin Franklin. Which are lovely names..

BUT I call my DH Eddie. So I do not want to call my son that. My FIL goes by Ed. So I do not want to call my son that. I think Edwin is to big of a name to call a little baby, more for when he grows up. And any variation of the name Franklin just does not do it for me.

What do I do?!?! Is there a cute nick name anyone can pick out from these names?! Should I just start calling him something else entirely?!

My DH work friends call him "Winnie".. Would a nick name like that be cute, or "Win"??

I am just stressing out over this because I feel if I have a boy I will not know what to call my baby :( Though I will love him deeply. The point might even be mute because it may as well be a girl. I just want to put my mid at ease.. ya know what I mean?? ( I have been dreaming it is a boy too!! )

I hope this made sense to anyone out there. Sorry if I rambled. Any help/advice greatly appreciated!!!

  • I kind of like "Win."  Spelling is a little different, but it's a cute name.
  • Loading the player...
  • i like "win". and you're right, the point will be moot if it's a girl! either way, you'll be happy and find the right nickname for your LO if it's a boy! good luck!

  • maybe call him Franky, I have a friend who's whole family on his dad's side all have the same name. My husbands all have the initials GSM maybe they can settle on the initials. But do what feel right.

  • I'm in the same boat.  My husband is a Jr. and our son (yes... it's a boy) will be the third.  So, Gary Bruce it is.  Problem is, there is no nick name for Gary and I'm certainly not calling my little baby Bruce.  All I can think of is the shark from Finding Nemo! lol  A friend recommended we call him "Trip", as in triple.  Is there something you could do with the "fifth" part of his name?  I don't know, but it's something to consider.

  • win or winny is adorable! love it!
  • I actually thought about that too! Doing something with fifth, or five. But Five or fifth doesn't have many cool nick names (jealous of your trip for the third btw lol ) All I could come up with is "fifer" which is actually the name of one of the three little pigs (he built his house out of straw.) And that is all I think about when I hear that! uggh!

  • We're in the same situation (DH is a 4th, if a boy it will be 5th). . . we're thinking of Quinn, or Quint, or Quinnie as a nickname (for 5) b/c there are still 2 versions of DH's first name still in use, and his middle name is really a last name.  Our friends seem to think the baby should be called Cinco since we live in TX Crying.

  • I know someone who's brother is a 5th & they called him "Quint" until he was old enough to decide what he wanted to be called. I thought it was kind of cute.

  • I don't know the rules of "juniors" but can you ADD a second middle name you love and call him that?

You could certainly nickname him Franky.

You could call him by initials... not sure what your last name is, but say "E-C" or "E-L"  (Not sure EF works... but maybe your last name?)

I adore Quinn, if you like the idea of playing off "5"

Or you could just come up with a totally random nickname like sonny, bubba, buddy, guy. Ok, those are all lame and sound like dog names, but you get the general idea.

Or you can just have a girl. :)

  • I think you should go with Win..it's cute but w/o being cutsie if that makes sense...I also don't like any variation of Franklin so another win for Win--haha! (had to!)

I'm in a similar boat--if we have a boy it will be a 4th--Husband's name is Benjamin. Great Grandpa is Tata Jamin, Grandpa is Benjamin, DH is Ben, and we're thinking Benny if we have a boy

  • I know a guy named Wynn.  If you ever see a Wynnsong Cinema from Carmike it's named after him.  It works.  Although I honestly really like the name Edwin on a little baby.  I think it's one of those things that will work itself out when you meet him and see his sweet little face.

ETA: I just wanted to add that one-syllable names are hard to stick with for babies.  If you go with Win, you will almost certainly end up calling him Winnie from time to time.  Which is also cute.  I have a Luke and a John and they are often Luke-Luke and Johnny or John-John because Luke and John are so short.

  • Since he is the 5th, how about calling him Quinn for a nn?  Winnie sounds too much like a girl's name and Win doesn't sound like a name.

  • Thanks everyone! Glad to know there are people there in the same boat and I am not crazy for having this dilemma. Will keep you posted on whether or not this issue is mute or not lol Just 2 weeks to go :) !!

Oh and for the initials suggestion.. it wouldn't work either.. Our last name starts with W So the initial thing would be EW haha Shoot lol

  • My mother's evil step-mom was named Winnie....I can't disassociate that name from an old woman's name.

Go ahead and call him Ed or Eddie.  In the end you will end up calling your kid by every-other nn out there.  My daughter probably thinks her name is Peanut because we rarely call her by her real name.

  • I'm from the South and we have a TON of families with males having the same name. I would just call them Big Ed and Little Ed or Big Eddie and Little Eddie.

I have this same thing in my family - we're in the south as well.  We have a Big Spud and Little Spud (short for Spurgeon).  Imagine trying to call a little baby "Spurgeon".
