I'm just looking to see what others think about having the AFP testing. I have heard a few bad stories of false positives and torn. Are you planning on doing it?
I copied someone else's response on this same question from another board for you. I felt it was very knowledgable and it made me want to talk to my Dr about the APF testing.
"The apf is the alpha fetal protein test. Unlike other tests, it doesn't tell you probabilities, it will tell you if there is definitely something going on with your baby. It's not a genetic test either. "AFP is a protein secreted by the fetal liver and excreted in the mother's blood. It is generally used for detecting neural tube defects, but it can also indicate: abdominal wall defects esophageal and duodenal atresia, some renal and urinary tract anomalies turner syndrome, some low birth weight fetuses, and placental complications. A low level of AFP could also indicate Down Syndrome."
You can do that AFP alone or the AFP in combination with the triple or quad screen. The triple and quad screen are tests of probabilities.
All of them could actually be really helpful in combination with an anatomy scan, which also looks for genetic issues too. Imagine if they missed something on the a/s b/c you didn't get your AFP and it was something that could have been watched or required earlier delivery in order to ensure a healthier baby. Personally, not a risk I'd be willing to take.
the triple/quad can also be used to rule out further testing and bigger issues that are discovered at your a/s. With my DS they found a marker at the a/s and ruled out the need for further testing b/c of good quad screen results. So, I was glad I chose to have a less invasive test done earlier vs. skip it and need an amnio later."

I have my NT scan and some blood work scheduled for Monday...I'm going to ask if I'm having the AFP test and what the doctor thinks I should have. I'll post updates next week.
