Issues with prenatal vitamins

I have always used the Nature Made, from Costco for all 3 pg's. I picked up a new bottle last week but the smell is so overwhelming as soon as I open it I start gagging, and can't get myself to swallow it.  Anyone had similar issues, I think I need to pick up another bottle without dha, all I smell is fish.  Ick!

Re: Issues with prenatal vitamins

  • Yuck, that would gross me out too! I have always used the Up & Up brand of pre-natals from Target. My OB's have been okay with it. They aren't too big and I haven't noticed a bad smell. Good luck!

  • I also take the Target brand and haven't had any problems.  They don't have the DHA, but Target does make a Pre-natal DHA supplement that I've been taking and it doesn't have any smell at all.

  • Thanks girls. I will hit Target tonight once D gets home.

  • When I remember I just take the Costco fish oil seperately.  They don't have a taste at all and other than being huge, go down fine.

This is exactly what I did too.

  • My OB thought I was crazy when I told her they stunk like fish and it was driving me crazy (during the end of my pregnancy with Collin). I still get them, and have learned to block it out and take it really fast with an awesome Zofran chaser that tastes like chalk. I take mine at night and it doesn't upset my stomach that way.

  • I had major issues with my prenatals as well.  I ended up taking the gummy prenatals from Target.  Sometimes I would get the name brand, but sometimes the Up & Up depending on which one was cheaper at the time

  • All of the ones I've gotten at the stores make me throw up... I'm not good at swallowing pills though. I just get the ones my dr. prescribes me that are chewable. They are a little more expensive ($10 a month after insurance) but worth not throwing up!

  • I take the One A Day Pre-natals (2 pills) with DHA and have had no problems.  I had the same issue with Costco ones and will gladly spend more not to gag everyday.
  • I take the Vitafusion gummies, I love them but they do not have calcium and iron, they do have DHA and folic acid.

I have the Up & Up gummies on hand to taste test them since they are about $3 cheaper a bottle, I hope they taste the same. All vitamins and minerals were the same measurement.

  • I had the same issue with the costco ones and returned them and got a new bottle. Didn't smell :) I tried the up & up ones and for some random reason I am allergic to them. I don't take anything but nature made now just because of that

  • Yes!  Everything by Nature Made smells awful to me (not even DHA-related), plus I just can't swallow them very well.  I use the Kroger brand from Fred Meyer or the Target ones.  They are both coated caplets.  Also, I have to take PNV's at night before bed or it comes back up on me.

ETA:  I bought DHA from GNC (online) and they were tiny red gel caps with no smell.

    I used:

Vitafusion Prenatal DHA and Folic Acid Gummy Vitamins

    Yummy!  At walmart. :-)

I love these - way better than the prescription chewables.  No fishy smell at all, as I hate fish and gag as well [even when not pregnant].  I hate swallowing big pills so I tried every chewable I could, settled on these.

  • The only ones I found that didn't make me feel more nauseous were the Rainbow Light prenatals.  I always took them before bed, which seemed to help too....but now I want gummy vitamins!
