Baby Names

Baby Namers, How many kids are you really going to have?

Since it's slow, and I'm interested.

I see a lot of people comment, half-jokingly, that they would have 6 kids just to use all the names they like. Consequently, DH and I have decided we want 4--6 kids, so I don't think it's so crazy to have that many.

So how many more babies do you think you'll have to name? Is that affecting your name search, or the names that are making it into your "final choices"? Do you feel more pressure to find THE name if you know you're only going to have one or two children?

I'll post my answer below.

Re: Baby Namers, How many kids are you really going to have?

  • We would like to have two, but at this point we may only have one, if any :(

It doesn't really affect my naming choices though as my H and I only agree on literally two names so I guess it works out. If I were left to my own naming devices the choice would be much harder though as there are a ton of names I would love to use that my H would never go for.

  • Betty is our one and only.

I'm a little sad that I'll never get to use our rockin' boy name, but not sad enough to make me want to try and procreate again. (We were kind of hoping for a girl this time around anyway. Smile)

  • I think two is pretty good..

I could maybe do a third.. but why have us out numbered :)

  • I honestly have no idea. The idea of being "one and done" has appealed to me lately, but not DH. I can't see us having more than three though...

I think I'm going to name each kid as if it's my last. Use my favorite name, and not worry about how it fits with other names that I like. That's what we're doing for this one, anyway.

  • one and done

our fav names will be saved for future furbabies.

  • Like I said, we'd like to have a big family, so (hopefully) at least three more kids. When we were dating, we'd talked about wanting a big family, but we didn't fully commit to the idea until after we had Monica and found out just how much we love having a baby and being parents. Also, with DH's job aspirations, there's a good chance that we'll be far from both of our extended families, and we like the idea of having a big, close family wherever we are.

The plan to have a bigger family doesn't really affect the name search, since we already have more names than we'll ever have kids. But it does broaden my perspective on what names we may actually end up using. I've gotten more open-minded in looking at names.

However, already having Monica named narrows the search in a way, because I want to find names that sound alright with hers. We'll just take it one child at a time, and keep re-assessing how many more after each one. But there are definitely some names I'd be sad if we never got to use, so I keep those at the top of the list.

  • As of right now we would love to have 3 kids.  I don't think it affects our naming choices at all... although I do have a list of sibling sets that I like with our DDs name.

  • We are thinking two or three...I guess we will make a decision about having a third once we see how demanding two will be!  This is way ahead of the game for us since we are still struggling to conceive #1!

  • I have always dreamt of 5 children and hubby is on board with what I want. But, we are now dealing with infertility and I would be happy if I could just have one. I will still dream of 5, but I will be happy with whatever number we land on.

  • Probably two.  It does affect our name search.  I definitely feel the pressure to find THE name. I don't want to regret not using the name because I love so many names, but with only wanting two children, it's hard to pick just a few.

  • Definitely 2, maybe 3. (We are both on the fence about the third. We will be more likely to be done at 2 if this one is a boy.)

I agree with HannahO that I will name them as if they are my last (whether or not they "go" together.) My DD's name is considered to be a major rule breaker on this board (last name first, boys name gone to girls etc) but our boy name is very old school and traditional. Doesn't matter to us. We love them both!

  • We *may* have one more baby to name, but I think Ms. C is our one and only if I am being honest.

  • My guess....3-5 kids.  So we'll have Asher, LO #2 (looking to be Jonah/Elijah or Lucy), then a few more.

Boys names...are a brutal task for us.

My girls are all named! Lucy, Audrey, and Savannah! :) Yay! Which means I'll probably have all boys haha.

  • In an ideal world, we'll have 2. But I could either end up waiting too long and not having one more at all or I could have a multiples pregnancy, something that seems really common among the moms I know IRL over a certain age. It's so scarily common that I am bracing myself for it and simultaneously thinking it would be awesome to use TWO more names (or three?).

That said, we have three more boy names picked out and the first one on our list has a middle name as well and we have one more definite girl name picked out with a short list of about 4 names we strongly like and might either consider as mns or as a first name for another girl if we had girl twins.

So, total, I could name about 8 more children, plus I already have 1. These would be:

Santiago, Orlando, Rodrigo, Pilar, Xiomara, Mariana, Lydia and Flavia.

  • I would LOVE four, DH would rather have three. We'll see :)

And as far as names, we have talked about our absolute favorites before we got married so we do have a few more names than three/four. I have some that I like more than others, and love them all for different reasons. But hopefully we get to use most of them!

  • We used to say we wanted 3 to 5 kiddos. Realistically, we'll probably shoot for three. I don't think it's really making an impact on our naming decisions, though, because I think we would choose the same name even if we knew Linus would be an only child. I think the same will ring true for any future children.

  • No more than two.  Possibly only this one, depending.  I'm okay with this though, I tend to use a lot of my favorite names on pets.

  • This baby, #2, is our last. Knowing that has made the naming process so much more stressful this go around.

  • We're probably one and done.  I don't think I'd like any name as much I like Betsy, anyway.
  • We will have 3 I think... a 4th would depend on our financial situation when the time comes. I'm not going to stress my family over a 4th, but if we are comfortable then I would love to be able to!
  • I would love to have 4 kids.  I think I would name each kid as if it were the last/only.

  • Probably just 2.  It doesn't really stress me out to think about names for just 2, but I do want to make sure that both kids' names are meaningful.

  • I really, really want 3. DH wants 2 only and he's pretty set on that. We'll see. If I did have 2 I think I'd be a little sad I wouldn't get to use more of my favorite names :)

  • We have 4 children now and hope to get pregnant once more, whether we have another singleton or more multiples is out of our hands. We have a list of 4 or 5 names for each gender, with two or three of them being our very faves. When we were naming the triplets we had no idea of what was popular or trendy or overdone, I wasn't coming to the baby name boards or looking at the SS top 100 lists, we just looked through a name website and picked what we liked. With Jericho we wanted a name that was more uncommon, but it's still just a name that we liked. We are not into naming our kiddos after anyone. The closer we get to being done the harder it is to narrow down the names. I wish we could have a dozen but that just isn't in the cards.

  • We want two, but I think we will start with one and see how that goes! If we end up having an amazing baby and are finacially set then maybe we will try for another! I have a boy name picked out and set. Im having a hard time picking a girl name, but we arent pregnant yet so we have time.

  • Lol, I'm the one who said that about the 6 kids!

I've always, always, always wanted a big family but have always, always, always been aware that at least part of the reason is because I love names.

At one point I wanted 9 kids, to be like my grandmother and also because of all the naming choices.  Lol, I've woken up from that nightmare, haha!

Before DS I had said 3-5 kids, DH and said 2-3.  While pregnant with DS, I got to a point where I really couldn't imagine being pregnant again, especially knowing next time I'd be chasing around DS.  After DS we've changed our minds again, we finally agree on 3-4.  Honestly, I think a lot will depend on my fertility (I needed Clomid to conceive DS) and if I need to have repeat c-sections.

  • I always wanted 3 kids and DH would like about 7 but we MAY be done after this baby is born. Of course, if we could I would love to get pregnant soon after this baby is born but given our struggle to conceive I'm not sure that would be possible. Never say never, though!

  • I would have three, but DH is fairly set on two.
  • Well I would like 3-4 children but DH is pretty happy with the idea of just 2. I think we will probably end up at 2 or 3. At the moment we have none so we have 2 girl and 2 boy names narrowed down to what we love. I'd honestly want 5 if I thought we could handle/afford it

  • Def one more baby, maybe to #3

I have so many names that I LOVE that it's sad to think I'll only get to use 4 more (including middle names) if we have two more. If we had unlimited resources, I might be tempted to have more just to name them. Kidding. Sort of

  • My FI and me definately want a big family and we have listed quite a few names we both like, we find it hard finding boy names we like though so hopefully more girls to name than boys :-p
  • We're also thinking 4-6, and are TTC #4. I started young with my first two and I just thought you picked a name and that was it. DD #1 has a nice name, but I regret DS name. With my last daughter I felt a lot of pressure to get it right, and now that we are TTC I am starting to feel the same pressure about this baby's name. I would really like all of my childrens' names to have the same style, but have to let it go since I didn't have that foresight when we first started. Oh well.

    Interesting post BTW.

  • We'll be thrilled if we can get one.

I definitely feel that IF has changed our thoughts on naming. We want it to be more significant rather than just a name we like. Example: my sister has "claimed" our dad's name for her future theoretical son. Well, I fully intend to use it for a MN if I'm ever lucky enough to be pregnant with a boy, and she'll live. As for a girl, I compromised with DH on the FN, Ainsley. To be perfectly honest, I'm not so sure I'd be willing to compromise anymore. If I'm only ever going to be a mom to one girl, I want her to have what I feel is the most beautiful name in the world. I'd be fully willing to give DH boy FN naming rights for that for a girl.
