Anyone else finding it impossible to find maternity clothes?

I have gone to 10+ stores and there is either NO maternity clothing at all, or two racks. No joke.

I hear raves about Burlington Coat Factory- nada. Macys- also zilch. Sears- zip. Kohls was the big winner with two racks (one for pants, one for sweaters). The only real option I'm having is Motherhood, but I want options!!

Anyone else??

  • Hi!  What size + body shape are you?  I'm a pre-pregnancy 8, very straight, and I hit the mother load at a Pea in the Pod after finding nothing elsewhere.

  • JCP online has a wonderful selection. Reasonable prices too.

I was a curvy 10/12 pre-pregnancy and haven't gained much weight, so am probably still close to that. I will definitely check them out.

And JCP online. And yoga pants! Oooh, yoga pants.

  • It is totally annoying especially if you want to find work appropriate clothes.  No one has a great selection.

  • It is a bit of a pain if you need to return clothes by mail - but I have had most of my luck online.  My pants are from Ann Taylor Loft and Gap.  (I waited for 40% off sales.)  They aren't that weird thin material that looks terrible on me.  They make my butt look cute.  Thank goodness.  I use tops from everywhere (also ON, Target, Kohl's) and often add an unbuttoned cardigan for work.

I do have a couple pairs of yoga pants/capris, but I feel kind weird wearing them out of the house (thank you very much Clinton and Stacy).

  • I was finding it impossible until recently. I was very disappointed in the selection at Motherhood and Target, and though I had some luck with tops/dresses at Pea in the Pod, pants for work I bought online were terrible--poor fit, poor construction and quality. And their prices are the highest.

I did have luck buying Gap Maternity online. I pretty much never shop at The Gap but I got 2 pairs of work pants, 2 pairs of jeans, and a dress for $215 last week. They have lots of sales and I wasn't disappointed with what I found. I was really excited for my bargains since I had been considering a pair of jeans at Pea in the Pod for $200 just because I was feeling so desperate!

I also plan to check out local maternity consignment shops. Not sure if you have any in your area, but I hear that those can be great.

  • I have scowerd all the stores in denver and surrounding citys with pretty much the same out come, if I'm lucky 1 or 2 racks. Motherhood has selection but at prices I can't afford. I tried Ross who had a decent selection, just either not my size or really my style. A friend suggested I check craigslist and thrift stores. I found a good lot of clothes from a lady on craigslist half of the pants fit perfectly, and she only asked $5/ per pants and shirts were about the same. Score! I've never been to any thrift stores around here till yesterday, but I went they had a huge selection! Most all of it was in really great shape too, from pea and pod, motherhood, liz claibron maternity etc. Designer for me size was hit or miss, I picked up a pair of work slacks for $7 and a pair of jeans for $2.50 cuz they were on the daily 50% of sale. I also bought two cute sweatshirts  2 long sleeve shirts, and some stuff for halloween costumes, all for $30. Just gotta make sure I wash them well because that's just me. But all and all I can't complain. I don't know why I didn't think of that before because in the past I've either sold my maternity stuff at a yard sale or donated it, which is what most women seem to do.

  • yes, I've gotten most of mine at Old Navy(though only online) and Motherhood and I have a hard time at Motherhood finding my size in stores, but never have Small Petites and I always end up needing to buy them online.

The other day I got some shirts I ordered from Motherhood and one had some lovely deodorant stains...that's going back!

  • Motherhood had the best options for me too. It's a little more expensive but I was able to find some really cute stuff.

  • I was having problems until I went on eBay.  Jackpot!!!  I'm about an 20-22 prepreg and trying to find plus size maternity clothes was impossible.  Motherhood was the only store I could find plus size in and even then it was limited to 2-3 racks consisting mainly of jeans and tees.

EBay has been a life saver.  Tons of listings for plus size clothes at decent prices.  One auction I won was for 10 work wear tops.  I'm not crazy about all of them but the price was right-$85 including shipping.  Another auction was 16 pieces for $90 including shipping.  I wasn't able to use the pants (4 or 5 pairs) because they're way too big so I'm just going to list them on Craigslist.

Craigslist is another great place to find maternity clothes.  If your a regular size there's usually tons and tons of listings, however, plus size listings, at least in my area, are few and far between.

  • My best bets have been consignment stores - there are 2 of them w/in 30 min of my house that are specifically maternity and they have had the best selection of anyplace I've been. Honestly I've been disgusted by the selection in all the regular stores and I can't see spending so much on clothes I'm only going to wear for the next few months... I got 2 pairs of pants and 2 shirts for $28. And I wore my "yoga" pants to work w/ a long v neck t-shirt and a nice cardigan... my coworkers asked me if I was going to an interview... Score one for pregnancy... I'd never get away w/ yoga pants otherwise!  Plus this way some of the transitional stuff I bought early on that isn't so comfy now I can just sell back and buy something that fits the belly a little better.

  • Yes but mainly because I am plus size and have to do most of my shopping online. Even the pickings online have been slim this time. Penny's had some stuff I really liked and some great prices but when I went to actually shop hardly anything I really wanted was available in my size. Bummer.Sad

  • I've done well with Old Navy and Gap. They have sales all of the time, especially if you sign up for their emails and have a credit card. I'm a little out of my comfort zone with some of the styles, but so far I've gotten lots of compliments from people. If nothing else, jazz up jeans or plain black pants with different layered tanks and sweaters and get some fantastic cheap necklaces or scarves to make it pop!

Yes - it costs $6 to ship stuff back, but I order everything in multiple sizes and ship returns from multiple orders back at once - you've got 45 days.

  • Everyone told me that Old Navy and Target would have a great selection but they barely have 2 racks--and I've been to more than one store.

  • I love Motherhood pants!  I also have a handful of tops and a few dresses from them.

I also love Old Navy tops.  They have some "different" things now other than the basics.  I like Target for the basics.

I HATE my Old Navy bottoms.  They have an awkward cut panel that isn't comfy or flattering anyway you try to wear it.

  • Today, I spent the afternoon looking for clothes.  Stopped by Target, Walmart, and then JCPenny since they were all down the road.  No luck at Target (two racks) or Walmart (one rack mixed in with their plus-size items) but JCP had more than two racks in varying sizes (most common was a size medium or I think 8-10) and more pants and jeans than blouses and shirts.  All the same, I was able to walk out with a pair of jeans I can wear for $25.

I want to check out Nordstrom, Macy's, and Motherhood but that requires a trip to the mall.

  • This is where I get most of my clothes. And target has been getting cute maternity sweaters in lately.
