Dh and I are starting the registry process to figure out what we need
for our first baby. All I have is these registry lists from places like
BRU and I am wondering if they are really accurate. H figures they
overestimate how many clothing items and put stuff you don't need on
there because they are just trying to sell you stuff. So if there was
something you got and it was completely useless (or alternatively,
absolutely essential) please share!
Re: What did you get that don't need/didn't need
Since this is our first I'm not sure what all we got and won't use but I was given the advice not to register for blankets or clothing and I'm so glad we didn't. We ended up with over 100 outfits and 45 blankets without registering for any.
Don't register for clothing...people give you tons.
I had a crap ton of blankets that we didn't use. We used a swaddle me instead.
ditto this.
Blankets, only register for 42"x42" muslin blankets...they're the only ones worth owning (IMHO).
Clothing, don't register for it, people will pick stuff out and what you pick might not be available when your shower happens.
8000 bottles... pick one to try and have a few on hand. My first DD HATED the bottle and we went through every single bottle on the market (no lie) and she never took one. We bought the Tommee Tippee (sp?) for DD#2 and she hated them... she liked the cheap Gerber ones from Walmart... they're $4 for 4 of them. Way cheaper and worked better for her.
Things we didn't use: hats (they NEVER stay on), decorative bibs, cute/little burp cloths, bath robe, most dress clothes for the first 3 months (he lived in sleepers and t-shirts/swaddle for the first 2 months and then wore onsies and shorts).
Every baby is different, but if you have a baby with acid reflux or one who just spits up a bunch, I highly recommend using these cloth diapers as burp cloths. We had 24 of them and washed every other day - but that is extreme.
Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

I'll be the opposite voice on the clothes, sort of... I wouldn't register for a bunch of stuff, so much of it goes in and out of season. But I don't see the harm in registering for a few specific things.
For example, the Gerber Side Snap Onesies are awesome and easy to locate at Target/BRU. https://www.target.com/p/Newborn-Gerber-Blue-Long-Sleeve-Onesies/-/A-13243360
And there were a few specific outfits that I saw that I loved and I'm glad I registered for them because I might not have ever bought them. I think it was good for the out of town people that shopped online and could get a toy, an essential or clothes and know it was something we liked.
I don't have many "dont gets". Another one of my favorites is the Ultimate Crib Sheet. Someone on here recommended it. I have two and keep them both on the bed at the same time in case I have to do a midnight change. Just strip the top one off and deal with the wash the next day. https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3763008&prodFindSrc=search
Ditto on not registring for blankets and clothes, except for the side-snap onesies or shirts, cause those are awesome! But as far as "cute" clothes go, people will buy you what they think is cute, and your kid probably will never wear it before it doesn't fit anymore. (I just packed up DS's newborn clothes, and half still had tags on them because unless we're going somewhere, he's in a diaper and side-snap shirt/onesie!)
The little hats and mittens are worthless also, IMO. The hats never fit DS, and he would always fling the mittens off.
I definitely WOULD register for sleepsacks, diapers, wipes, California Baby diaper rash cream, infant bathtub, and a bouncer or swing. That's pretty much what we use daily.
Ditto this - LOVE the UCS! I didn't register for this either, but a seasoned mom gave one to me, and i was so glad!
We got a lot of blankets, bibs, and clothes (that we didn't register for). I didn't get a lot of baby toys - so I would register for a few of those.
To echo what others said, baby hats and mittens were completely useless, as were most blankets. Sleepsacks, swaddle-me's, and the miracle blanket were things I did NOT register for but should have.
I wouldn't register for clothes except for basic onesies, side snap shirts, etc.
One thing I would definitely register for: small toys. Once Maddie was 6-8 weeks old she started to need constant entertainment and we had NO toys. The baby einstein take along tunes toy was her favorite then and she still likes it at almost 11 months.
I think you are the one that told me about them!
