Question from a rookie...

Now that DS is reading he's trying to write words on his own by sounding them out.

Sometimes he'll let me help him and I do my best to explain how words fit together when they're spelled different from how they sound.

Sometimes he's 100% adamant that he wants to do it himself and doesn't want my input.

I think I remember reading that when they're at this stage you should leave them alone about spelling, right?

Here's the catch - his name is Dylan.  He's been able to spell and write it for some time now.  However..... now that he's sounding out words he wants to write his name DILIN instead of Dylan.

I need to leave him alone about this and let him do it his way for now, right?

I could care less how he wants to spell his name... I'm just curious how his teachers will handle this so I can be on the same page. 

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

    Our kindergarten teacher only encourages proper spelling with the kids' specific "sight words."  Other than that, inventive spelling is fine. 

    I'm not sure what to say about his name though.  I'd probably encourage him to spell it properly.

    I would practice with him how to spell his name. Maybe a name puzzle or something like that so he can visually see it and work it out. For the rest I would let him spell phonetically until he's a little older.

    Ditto Dandelion.  While you don't want to make spelling a huge issue, you also don't want them to make a habit of spelling high-frequency words incorrectly.  

    You might try convincing him by telling him that people won't recognize his work if he doesn't spell his name correctly.  He wants people to know who did this amazing writing, right?  Then he needs to put HIS name on it, not some other kid named Dilin!!
