I've posted the below in the baby shower board, but thought I'd also post here in case there are some local gems you ladies know of.
Neither hostess or I bake. Instead of a cake, we want to have cupcakes for my shower taking place in 2 weeks. We need 4 dozen simple cupcakes (chocolate with pink frosting and will "decorate" them with cute toppers). We are trying to keep this at about $1/cupcake since we've busted the budget on other areas of the shower already. I've checked local bakeries and on average they're asking for $30 per dozen... holy cow. I've checked grocery store bakeries (Krogers, HEB, etc.) and they don't do special order cupcakes. You can basically buy whatever they have pre-made on display... which right now is all orange-y Halloween stuff. Having never baked more than brownies I am game on trying to DIY 4 dozen cupcakes, but I am nervous for the impending explosion that will once be known as my kitchen...I also want my guests to survive the shower intact..... so thought before I embark on this adventure if you ladies had any other ideas/suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet and get the traditional shower cake?
Re: baby shower cupcakes... help
Nestie MissJake does cakes on the side. Based on her site, cupcakes are $18/dozen - maybe that will work?

Nestie Odear also does cakes on the side, but not sure what her prices are:

Have you checked Sam's club or Costco? I'm not sure on their special order policy for cupcakes but they are really yummy.
I can't believe the grocery stores wont do a simple special order like that.
Your guests will not know if you use a box mix to make the cupcakes. The hardest part is going to be icing them to look pretty. I bet you could find some good DIY directions online.
I love using the Cake Doctor's recipes and adapting them for cupcakes. She uses box mixes but then "doctors" them with sour cream and other things to make the taste richer. Two boxes = 48 small cupcakes usually. I pour the batter into a gallon ziplock bag, cut off the corner and use it as a makeshift pastry bag to fill the paper cups.
Your cupcakes will taste homemade if you frost them with a simple homemade butter cream. I have a little gadget I bought at Target to make the frosting come out pretty. It's not hard to make cupcakes - just a bit time-consuming.
