We had our shower yesterday and it turned out AMAZING! We ended up getting so many nice things! We ended up with over 1500 wipes-my cousin got us this huge box of 832 and then we got a ton of smaller packs.
We also got a ton of bath stuff and I was wondering for experienced moms-would you keep all that stuff or return some? I don't know how fast we will go through it. We got probably 4 bottles of different sizes of the baby wash and then two huge bottles of bedtime lotion. I was thinking of returning a few of the baby washes and just getting diapers or something because it just seems like so much, but if we go through it pretty fast it'd be nice to have the extra.
WWYD?
Re: How much baby wash/lotion/etc?
It depends on how often you give your LO a bath but it is something that does not expire so it can easily store. It really sucks when you get to bath time and notice that you have to send DH to the store to pick up a bottle of baby soap. Also its good to have extras just in case you happen to have another kid in the house and you end up wondering why they are in the bathroom so long to find out that all of the soap is now in the toilet and spread across the ground..... (Bathroom smelled great for weeks lol)
I make sure to keep at least 3 bottles of soap at all times and if it is forgotten at grandmas and grandpas house then it is okay cause you have extra. Sorry for rambling.
I'm also a FTM, but wanted to mention that at our childbirth class last week, the nurse mentioned that ideally, you wouldn't even use lotion or baby powder on the baby. Apparently it can tear down their skin. I haven't looked into it anymore, but it sounds like something to ask the pediatrician!
Of course, I've already received a few bottles of lotion and even bought one myself! It's hard to resist that baby smell!
I personally don't know how you could go without using lotion. Baby's skin dry's out soo quickly, you have to replenish that moisture. Ds has sensitive skin so we have always used Aveeno on him, but have always lotioned him up after everybath (wich is everyother night). If we don't use lotion his skin gets dry.
I'd keep the baby wash if you're OK with the ingredient list because as a PP said, you'll use it eventually.
As for the lotions, I'd return them. Newborns typically don't need creams and lotions slathered on them. If you do need one, I'd recommend an all natural brand free of additives and suspected carcinogens. If you want something you can find readily on the shelves instead, I'd at least go with Aveeno Baby (fragrance free, of course).
As for the dry skin after the bath thing, there's a solution: baby oil. All you have to do is put a little bit of baby oil in the bath water and that will stop baby's skin from becoming too dry.

I'm a FTM so take this with a grain of salt. I've been looking at lots of products and I'm becoming very picky on what lines I'll even put on baby. As a cosmetologist I'm a freak about products as it is. But can't help but wonder if the need for all these lotions and such are stemming from the washes themselves drying out LO's skin. I'm particularly anti J&J and Aveeno (made by J&J). If it were me I'd be trading in some products for other products I liked better. And, in my experience the better the product line the longer the bottle lasts anyways. IMO.
DD is 6.5 and we still use baby wash - as long as the smell is one that is pleasing to you, I'd keep them since they don't "go bad". OTOH, we never used lotion with DD, there just wasn't any need to since baby skin is so soft to begin with.
The thing is, you WILL go through all that stuff! The wipes depending on if your baby has a reaction might be another story, but you won't know until they get here if that'll be the case.
Return them! You know you are gonna need diapers!
Plus as others have said, newborns don't do so well with soaps and lotions (or dryer sheets fyi) so you won't be using them for awhile.
You never know what your child might be allergic to, mine was allergic to everything except California baby wash, I tried several before I found one that didn't give her rashes/scaley skin. So if you have any unscented/extra gentle ones I'd keep those. I ended up giving away 4 bottles of stuff that I tried.
I kept everything I got with DS because I figured I'd use it sometime. Well, turns out he has very sensitive skin and I still have gobs of baby product. Hopefully baby girl can use some of it.
If I knew then, what I know now, I would return a lot of the product I received just in case LO couldn't use certain brands.
I'd say to return the bulk of it too. Even bathing DD everyday I feel like it takes forever to got through a bottle of soap. I'd rather have the free space in my bathroom!
We never used any lotion. In the very beginning her skin did look dry for a day or two. But like the nurses told us, that was just her adjusting to life outside the womb and it went away quickly. If you never use it in the first place chances are good that you won't need to.
