Lunch meat?

I have been reading in What to expect that I shall not eat lunch meat. But I love it. Anyone here eat lunch meat and have a healthy baby girl? Or boy.... I just really want a baby girl.

Re: Lunch meat?

  • I tried to avoid it, but really it wasn't hard for me because I'm not that big on lunch meat anyway.  I know lots of women who ate plenty of lunch meat while pregnant and their babies were completely healthy.  I think it's just wise to make sure that it's fresh and from somewhere reputable as far as food safety goes.

  • Yup, I did.  My doctor was a very "in moderation" type.  I also had coffee and caffeine (a lot less than normal, but at times).

Also, it seems to me that almost every pregnant woman I know went through the "Subway Phase" where they HAD to have Subway sandwiches (myself included, I can't explain why, I'm not that big of a fan normally).  :)

  • ^ that was me... couldn't get enough Subway.  And my daughter is perfect.  :)

  • And welcome, by the way!  This is a good group of ladies, so stick around so everyone can get to know each other.  :)  Just curious, which one is you in the photo?
  • Yep the first time around I ate lunchmeat. This time I went through the Subway phase just like IHHM. Now it's Jimmy Johns !

  • The concern about lunch meat is listeria- and if you microwave the lunchmeat before eating it (or heat it, like in a grillled ham/cheese) you are fine.

I also always recommend that people throw out "what to expect"  There are much better pregnancy books with lots less fear-mongering- IMHO.  I personally liked "great expectations: your all in one resource for pregnancy and childbirth" a lot more.  But there are so many books, its hard to decide.

  • Glad to hear so many of you have healthy babys.

I am the one wearing the tank top and holding a purple cup.  I was having a bad hair day that day please don't laugh. I promise my hair don't always look that nasty.

  • Is this your first?

  • My first baby? Yes it is.
  • Well congratulations!  Also - I like your tank top!
  • Yeah, what the others said about lunchmeat and What to Expect.

    Also, nice rack.  Seriously.

Yeah, what the others said about lunchmeat and What to Expect.

    ^My sentiments exactly.

I ate lunchmeat (I didn't even know it was "a thing" until I found this site at 20 weeks), sushi, soft serve ice cream, soft cheese (most cheese in this country is pasteurized), you name it. As long as you are eating at reputable establishments, and you are not eating cheese that someone made in their bathtub or meat that they cut on a dirty blade, you should be fine. If you are really worried about it, microwave the meat for a few seconds to kill any bacteria. And like Bunch suggested, get rid of WTEWYE. That book gets so annoying the further you get into it. I loved Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn.

My midwife was also an "all things in moderation" provider. My kid came out, big and happy. Listeria contamination is very rare in this country. However, there  was just an outbreak of it in cantaloupe, of all things!  Congrats on your LO, and welcome to this board!

  • People have been dying recently from listeria from cantelope though.... It's always something.

  • i heard if you have your subway toasted it's fine...and i've also heard of people asking the subway people to microwave the meat first... either way, as long as it's cooked, it's "safe"...but it's really safe *anyways* if  it's kept well.

  • I ate it DD is fine. I go with the moderation in key. I'm a huge sushi fan and can't give it up (I just eat mostly cooked rolls). Your hair does not look horrible! Mine looks worse then that daily and poor dd has hair that is crazy!

  • Thank you. I will look into other books. You all have cute kids.

  • My doctor told me that lunch meats like turkey and ham are fine during pregnancy. The ones you want to heat before eating are the cured meats like salami, pastrami, etc.

  • I have eaten lunch meat (&tuna) with all 3 of my pg's. My doc isn't overly concerned with the meat issue, and like pp said right now melon is a huge issue for listeria.

Welcome to the board, it is a great group of girls. And congrats on your 1st baby~

  • I must be the only one who found WTEWYE helpful. Sure there's scary stuff in it, but since I went through scary stuff, it seems more practical than anything. Lunch meat...so yeah, everyone here has pretty much covered the concerns. My 2009 baby had a much longer avoid list than my 2011 baby. My midwife suggested staying away from places you don't trust, especially buffets where food sits out, and the standard soft/unpasteurized cheeses. I ate at Sister's in Everett, but had them microwave the ham because I couldn't see them prepare it. I ate at Jimmy Johns in Everett, but didn't have them microwave it because we could see them prepare it. Oh, and Jimmy Johns is delish.

  • I stayed away from it, which was easy to do since I was mostly veggie at the time, but I also heard it's okay if heated up.

Welcome to the board and congrats!

This was me.  My first 3 months of my pregnancy my morning sickness was bad & the only thing that I wanted was subway turkey subs.  But then I read that whole no lunch meat thing.   I figured some food was better that no food & after my 3rd month I stayed away from it just in case & my morning sickness was gone so I could eat other things. :-)

Good luck with your 1st.  Relax & try to enjoy this time.  And on another note don't stress about whether its a boy or girl.  You can't control that.   Just love the baby for being yours. :-)

This!   Only I only mostly stayed away from it and Im not a vegitarian,  I had a hard time staying away from Jimmy Johns if I was by one (which is pretty rare).   And I would have quiznos since it is toasted.

And J, blame the views on the boobs!  Girlytwirly's milkshake brings all the bumpies to the yard! =P
