Weight gain and birth controll pill

I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting but I have a concern/question

When I finished BF my daughter back in november I got back on ortho-tricycline, i since have noticed a significant weight gain (20lbs). I had my yearly check up in May and I voiced this concern to my MD,he brushed it off and said it was probably my age (ummm what?). But could it be my BCP? If so what BCP do yall recommend? Or any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

  • I gained 40lbs over the course of about 5 or 6 years on BCP.  I'm not sure with BCP to recommend...BCP has different affects on different people.

  • It could also be that you aren't bf'ing anymore, or a combination of the 2.  Also your doctor is right about the age thing- as we get older our metabolism slows down.

I lost all of the weight I gained w/ DD in 5 or 6 months w/ no real change in diet or exercise, then when DD started solids and stopped BF'ing as much I had 10 lbs creep back on.  2+ years later after having DS the weight did not fall off the way it did w/ DD- and while part of that is probably having "toddler" food around, it also is probably because I am 2 years older.  *sigh*

  • I never put much weight into claims that BCP made women gain weight- I had been on them for 10 years and although I had wanted to loose 5-10 lbs I just assumed it was because I was getting older and less active.  Then a few years back I went off them and without changing diet or exercise, not only did I loose 10 lbs but I went from 34C to a 34DD(almost DDD) it was crazy!! I decided then to never go back on them again and never felt better.  I chart now to avoid or conceive- whichever is the case for us.
  • I started taking ortho tri cyclen when I was 17 and I am now 28.  Of course I was off of it for a good while, while I was pregnant and nursing.  I have never had any weight issues at all.  The pill itself doesn't cause weight gain...it causes an increase in appetite.  If you continue to eat healthy, not over eat and exercise you shouldn't really gain any weight from it at all.
