Minimal 6 months, hoping for longer.....or until the baby bites my boob.

I also (flame me if you must) think its weird when the baby can ask for a drink and they are still breastfeeding.  I think bf is a great and natural thing, but when a "big" kid can say, "Mom, I want milk.",  and a boob comes flying out.....I think its time to wean.  I know mothers will disagree but this is just my opinion and I don't set the rules.  I bf all my kids and made it to at least 4/6 months, but breastfeeding twins is HARD!  This time I'm determined to make it to a year!!

    This!

If they're old enough to be asking for milk and you still want them to have breast milk, then I think it should be pumped.  Way too weird to have them breastfeeding after a year IMO.

I get what you're saying, but I think a year is the wrong number to use. At 15 months (she self-weaned at 14 1/2 months), my daughter certainly couldn't/can't ask for the boob.  The closest she came was trying to pull my shirt down, but that happened early on.. probably 7 months or so.

  • I'd like to make it to a year this time-even if the last few months I just pump.  With my son I EBF for 2 months then EP's until he was 10 months old, but had a freezer stash so he got BM until he was about a year old.

  • I will go as long as we can.  Last time we only made it to 4 weeks, then 2 weeks of supplementing and stash.  It was so hard.  We had a ton of problems.

I will try again this time, but if it doesn't work out, I won't stress.

I want to be realistic this time.  It's not easy for everyone.  If it works out, I will try to go until summer vacation is over.  I won't know what my schedule will be like, so I don't know if pumping is feasible or not.

GL to everyone!!!  I hope everyone makes it to their goals!

  • When I was pregnant with my first, I tended to agree with those who have said they would never nurse a child that was old enough to as for it.  I planned on no more than 1 year.  BUT, once I started nursing my baby, and got past those initial hard days/weeks, it became such a wonderful part of our day! It was convenient, free, always the right temperature, and it could calm him down no matter what!  I exclusively breastfed until I went back to work at 5 months, then pumped during the day and nursed morning and night until he was 14 months.  At that point, he was on cows milk during the day, and nursed morning, night and weekends. As someone else mentioned, they "ask" for milk long before they can talk - by tugging at your shirt, trying to wiggle into nursing position, etc. Mine started using sign language to ask for milk at about 10 months, and used his words to ask from about 18 months on.  Not once did it seem strange or weird - it is a very natural relationship, and the innocence with which he asked for milk was never anything but sweet.  Eventually, he was down to just one feeding a day which we kept up until he was 23 months old.  I would have nursed him longer, but one day, he just didn't ask for it, and self-weaned.  I was dreading weaning because he loved to nurse so much, so I couldn't have asked for a better way to end our nursing relationship than with him deciding to stop on his own. The only reason I was anxious to stop was to TTC #2 - at 23 months, I had still not started my period (another breastfeeding bonus for some!) I hope to nurse the new baby at least as long, but as previous posts said, only as long as it's working for both of us!

  • We'll see what happens. I'm going to have to start pumping when I go back to work at 8 weeks.

DD could sign for milk (so "ask" for it) at 7 months. Is nursing a 7-month old weird to you? I get that this is your opinion and you have a right to it, but your statement is offensive to a lot of women. Many, many people nurse past 1 year and the health benefits don't stop at 1 either.
