Elf on the Shelf?

A friend told me I need to get an Elf on the Shelf for when DS gets a little older so I looked into it on Amazon but it looks a little creepy!? I think I would have been scared of it when I was little, am I missing something? Does anyone do this with their kiddos?

Re: Elf on the Shelf?

  • I never did it as a child, so it seems really creepy to me too.

  • We're not into Santa much here, so we won't have one, but lots of our friends have an Elf on the Shelf and their kids love them!  IRL they're cute.  I think it's all about how you talk to your kids about it and not making it a "Big Brother Santa is watching youuuuuuuu!" deal.

  • The elf totally creeps me out too. I think someone on here bought it, but I can't remember who. I won't buy one because it scares me! :-)

  • I think they're creepy too.  We got one because my mom got it.  Ben thought it was pretty cool last year at almost 4.   I don't really think it's that cool.

  • The elf may look a little creep, but I think the idea is really fun! I plan on getting one next year when DD is almost 3. I've seen some people get really creative with their elf and their kids get super excited! :)

  • We have it. M loves it and talks about "Hughey" all year long. It is really fun every morning to watch his excitment on where he will be, dh and I take turns hiding him  and that is 1/2 the fun.  We got it the xmas M was turning 3, so have done it 2 years. Hughey comes right after T-day, and he looks forward to it every year.

  • Many many of my parent friends in the Boston area did this, but with kids ages 3-4 or older. I don't remember their kids being scared of the elf, but loving finding him all kinds of crazy places. I'm hoping to do it in several years once my baby-to-be is at least 3.

  • My mom had one from when she was a little girl. We just made it a tree ornament and it blended in with all the other ornaments. I didn't find it as creepy as the one-eyed snowman that was Dad's! Indifferent

  • My mom cares for 1 neice and 1 neph and they use it.. and love it. When my neice saw that ours hadn't moved in two visits to our house last year I had to search for an answer.. But DS was only a month old for XMAS so since the baby didn't move much neither did the elf.

My sister has 2 kiddos and they are both young, but understood the concept. They looked for him every day and they liked the idea.

I don't know if we will go all out with ours because I don't know how I feel about the Santa myth.. but.. they are a sweet idea.. I guess all in all you just have to decide if you are in to it.
