Does DS need a winter coat?

It's starting to cool off here and winters can be nasty (wind and cold temps). Do we need to get DS a winter coat? He can't necessarily wear it in the car seat can he?

We have an infant seat and a hand-me-down cover for it, but I have a feeling he will outgrow the seat before its cold enough for the cover. We have a convertible seat already and I wasn't sure what we can put him in as far as clothes go and still be able to buckle him in.

  • target has winter type sacks that have openings for the belt straps and buckles.

  • No thick/puffy coats or snowsuits in car seats - it makes it so the straps aren't tight enough and baby can fly out in a crash. With a convertible seat, you have to take off the coat too and if you want you can put it on backward over top afterward. Otherwise, you just use blankets over the seat.

If you'll spend time outside other than running to and from the car, then you need a proper winter coat or snowsuit. We haven't got that far yet - we have a couple snowsuits people gave us, but they're from Old Navy and I don't think they're actually very warm.

I won't be buying anything aftermarket with holes for the straps - none of that stuff is actually approved by anyone as safe.

  • You can remove the coat when your baby is in the car seat and just tuck blankets around him for the drive.  You don't want anything thick in between the car seat straps and the baby.  We have a few coats for DD for winter, as it can get fairly cold here and I expect we won't always be indoors with her.

  • We have a winter coat for DD.   Last year with DS I would put the coat on him (unzipped) and buckle him in with the sides of his coat pulled out (if that makes sense).  Then after he was buckled in I would snap it if I though he needed the extra warmth.  It just made it a lot easier putting him into his convertible seat, and then getting him out in the cold.  There is a video that circulates on here come winter time on how to do it safely... I am sure if will surface again this year.

i would like to see that. i had no idea it was "unsafe" to put LO in a carseat with a heavy coat. not to sound snarky, but i really don't see how that would make the baby easier to get thrown out of the carseat.?

I don't go as far as to take the coat off, but like I said before I don't zip the coat as shown here.

If the straps are too loose it is scary how a baby/kid's body can just slip out when the coat is compressed when in an accident.

It is not as safe as I could be, but I have tested the straps with the coat off and they are tight enough.

I think I'm going to make a car seat poncho from one of the eight zillion baby blankets we got - I'll just cut a head hole in a polar fleece one. When it gets really cold, we'll probably have to do the jacket with the straps mostly underneath trip. Weather here gets pretty extreme.

  • We bought a polar fleece footed suit. Its kind of like her footed jammies but it also has a hood...with ears of course so she can look like an adorable bear!...and is warm. We will put blankets over her when it gets colder.
