Pregnant after IF

2nd Trimester: Week of June 26th!

Happy Monday ladies!!!

This is a weekly check-in for those in their 2nd trimester: weeks 14 through the end of week 27.

Congrats to all the strong ladies who have made it this far! It's such a great feeling and we've all accomplished so much! We are now 1 week closer to the end of this especially long journey we call "infertility."

Please post below a little about yourself, how many beans you have growing inside, if you have found out the sex(es) and what your EDD is. Please also let us know how far you've made it on your journey and when your next appointment is and what for. If I'm missing anyone from this list, or you are new to the 2nd tri, please let me know and I will add you.

Please let us know when you have graduated to 3rd trimester so that I can update our list!

  • Good morning ladies! How was everyones weekend?

I'm currently 23w3d and my stomach has seriously popped this past week! We worked on painting the nursery this weekend and went to the CPR Infant Safety class that our hospital offered last night. I feel so much better knowing the basics and all the resources that they provided. We had our follow up appointment on Wednesday and both of her kidneys are dilated, so we have to just wait and see if they correct themselves. From what I have read, it is fairly common and usually does fix itself so I'm trying to not worry too much. I still have placenta previa though so I am on limited activity and pelvic rest.

I am a bit bothered with my OB from our last visit, but feel like its too late/stressful to look for someone else. He goes so fast in our appointments and I usually have to interrupt him to get a single question out. We go to the imaging center for our ultrasounds before we see him, and the entire process takes 4-5 hours because they are always behind, but I only get to see him for maybe 5 minutes so I have to be ready with what to ask. This last appointment he seemed to rush over my scans and he mentioned that there was "blockage but it wasn't brain damage". I had no clue what he was talking about, so I asked him to clarify, and he looked at my husband and said "she is a suspicious one isn't she?" and then "you're going to have to get used to that."...seriously? Don't mention brain damage when you are a doctor and I don't know your sense of humor and then make me feel insecure about asking a question. He then said there were enough issues for me to have anxiety until the next appointment, but nothing too serious and that he thinks everything will be fine. My husband thinks he just had a bad sense of humor, but it just made me not want to ask any more questions.

  • @LeFemmeViolette Ahh how exciting to put the crib and chandelier together! It is so crazy when you start to feel the baby move! I can feel her roll now and it is so bizarre to see my stomach shift sides  :D. We should have a nursery project thread. I love seeing everyones nursery ideas.

  • Hey Ladies happy New week!! Hope everyone had a great weekend :)

@ChocolateIsLife I am so sorry that your OB does not have good bedside manner. I would be complete frustrated with him as well but you are right it makes it tough to do anything or make changes this late in the PG. Good luck with what you decide.

I'm 22+4 with a little girl and we had a quiet week closing it with a quiet weekend. I did a lot of cleaning and we are going to get ready to paint and do the nursery walls. I am thinking that will start/happen this weekend and next.

  • @Joslynj11 thanks girl. I think I'm just going to suck it up the remainder of pregnancy. We have too much going on so that is the last thing I want to worry about, it would just be neat to have an OB that I'm comfortable with. What colors are you thinking for your nursery?

  • I go here now!
Most of my history is in my siggy, but we have unexplained IF. We went through treatment a few years ago and after a long road ended up with our rainbow twins. After they were born I just knew I wasn't done. We gave treatments a shot again and are 14wks (EDD 12/25) with one pistachio this time. We are team green.  I have another midwife appointment in 2 weeks. We had our NT scan last week and everything looked great. I'm still struggling with nausea/dry heaving and fatigue though the nausea side of things is starting to get better.

@lafemmeviolette its great your making so much progress in the baby's room.
@ChocolateIsLife  i'm sorry your OB has a shitty bed side manor, are there other OB's in the practice you could interview/see to see if they are a better fit?
    @Joslynj11 a quiet week/weekend sounds wonderful

  • @ChocolateIsLife Wow, I'd have a very hard time not finding someone else with all that nonsense combined. My doctors always go quick, but they do make sure to ask specifically if I have any questions or concerns and they do answer them.  I know the feeling, how it's almost more stressful to find a new doctor than to have a bad doctor this late in the game, but do you really want to risk delivering with someone who says something like "there are enough issues for you to have anxiety" but makes you feel somehow wrong for asking for more information? That strikes me as the kind of doctor who would ask you if you want a C-section, but then not give you the reason he's asking you that question.  It might be worth at least just calling a few other practices, seeing what their processes are like if you're thinking about switching.  Maybe you switch, maybe you don't, but at least it might put you more at ease to talk to someone about the process, even if you never pull the trigger.

AFM, anatomy scan was this week, and it's a boy!!  Which is super exciting because that's what we were both hoping for.  Everything looks normal (except they couldn't get good spinal views, so while they're not worried, they want me to come back for more pics in 2 weeks), so that's a relief.  And I finally felt him move! Turns out I'd been feeling him for a while, but until I saw the movement on the screen while I was feeling things, I thought I just had to fart lol.  So we were able to do a little "gender reveal" with DH's family, which was nice.

QOTW: I was looking forward to movement.  So exciting now that I know what to look for. And of course for finding out girl or boy, and knowing makes registering so much more fun lol.  I was and still am keeping things fairly neutral, mostly grays, but I do love me some green-and-blue combos, so I'm kinda going nuts.
  • @ChocolateIsLife uhh not ok! I actually switched mid-pregnancy with my daughter, I understand if you don't (one more thing to do!) but it was a pretty easy transition. However I can say I didn't like my IVF doctor at all, but it was successful so I can't complain, I think you take what you can tolerate. Is there another doctor in your practice? That would be a very easy transition. With my daughter I was switching hospitals completely so there was a lull between appointments and they redid a physical but then it was standard normal appointments again. Hopefully he just shuts his mouth though and answers questions nicely!

@sasha29-2 congrats on the boy!! how exciting to know!

@wabash15 welcome over here! Are your twins excited??

22 weeks here (I'm losing track, I had to check!) Feeling movement and more from the outside, it's always mid-night or morning but I can't wait to show my daughter and have her feel her "baby brudder." We're between two names, Keagan or Graham, so I feel like that's one giant thing we can check off!

QOTW feeling baby move more, the "relaxing" trimester with not so much discomfort. Why I'm trying to crank through as much as I can, so I can relax when I have a free moment in the third tri!
  • @ChocolateIsLife I completely understand you not wanting to change right now. Talk about stress, I just wish you had a better relationship with your OB so you did feel comfortable. Are there others in the practice that might be the ones delivering? With my practice there are like 4 OBs so I might not get mine for delivery.

Also, for the nursery we were going to go with 2 gray walls (opposite) and then 2 brick walls(opposite) but with us falling in love with a gray crib now we are thinking the color should be something like teal or sea foam since we are beachy people and so the crib doesn't drown in the wall colors. I attached the link for the brick paneling and the color that I like :) then I think we will go with pink and gray accents with the decor and bedding and stuff like that. Let me know what you think!

@wabash15 WELCOME to the 2nd Tri! I hope your symptoms start to fade soon. I know I still had major nausea until about 20wk. I hope that's not the case for you too.

@sasha29-2 Congrats on a great AS and on a little boy!!

@PolythenePam I'm not sure they totally get it yet but when I ask what mommy has in her belly they both respond "a baby" then DD lifts up her shirt and points to her belly saying "baby belly!" its very cute. I hope as the get just a little older and can start feeling the baby kick they will understand more.

@ChocolateIsLife I would be upset too!  I'm so sorry about his bedside manner. I don't know if I would have been able to bite my tongue. Kudos to you.

@wabash15 welcome to the 2nd trimester!

@Joslynj11 I love the colors!  I'm doing a nautical theme since the rest of the house is beachy. The walls for the nursery were a softer yellow to begin with, and it happens to look good with the gray, white, and Aqua/sea foam color scheme.  We also have accents of blue.

    @sasha29-2 congrats on a boy!

Afm, I'm 27 weeks today and this is my last week in the 2nd trimester board. My back has started to hurt, and not just at night. My NP recommended a maternity belt. I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to wear it each day and will ask at my next appointment, which is the end of next week. I love feeling baby boy move, kick, hiccup, or whatever it is he's doing in there. He's active in the mornings, evenings, and when I lay down at night.

QOTW:  I looked forward to feeling better after all the nausea, tiredness, and indigestion of the first trimester. If I had known I would eventually be able to feel him move, that would have been the thing I looked forward to most.  However, my placenta was in front, so I wasn't sure if I'd ever feel a lot of movement.

@Kp214 ahhhh so excited to see you at the top of the list!! Hurray for moving on to 3rd tri next week!

@ChocolateIsLife I'm so sorry about your dr. My first thought was what an idiot, who would say anything about brain damage to a pregnant lady?!?! Not funny at all.

@LeFemmeViolette the paneling project sounds cool! Post pics when you're done!

    @sasha29-2 congrats on your boy!

@wabash15 so happy to see you here! Congrats on being 2nd tri!!

AFM, I am 19+3 with my triplet boys. Had our anatomy scan today, everything they could see looked good. They all had clenched fists, so couldn't get a clear view of hands/fingers, and the twins were not cooperating much, so no clear images of spines or hearts for them. We're seen every 5 days at the MFM, so the plan is to just look every time we go in. They are all right on track growth wise, weighing in at 10, 11, and 10oz. Getting excited--I have a max of just over 14 weeks to go!!

QOTW--feeling them more! Both placentas are anterior, so I haven't felt them too much yet. Looking forward to kicks I can share with DH.

  • 15+1 here with twins. Feeling okay, had some insomnia issues last night that snowballed my day comepletel7y. I can't wait till Friday, my next appointment. I have many questions to ask them. Also hoping we can get a quick scan to see if we can tell whether they are both boys or if it will be boy/girl twins. We know at least one of them is a boy from our blood work.

My family is so excited that they have thrown themselves into helping us get the nursery worked on. We have the gross carpet out and the walls have been painted. Need to touch up some spots before the flooring goes in. We've chosen a nice gray color that will be easy to accent either way. Might be a little early to have so much work done on that room, but I'm just letting them run with it. So long as DH and I make the final decisions.

@ChocolateIsLife Ugh, your OB. Hoping that improves otherwise it would be tempting to give him unfiltered comments.

@wabash15 Welcome! I love it that your right behind me so I can pick your brains about everything. Your little girl and her baby tummy! So cute.

@srh18 I've been lurking through your journey, appts every 5 days.

@sasha29-2 Congrats on it being a boy!

Wow thank you ladies so much for your supportive words. It really helps to hear that I'm not over reacting, because I sometimes don't know. The practice has 3 OB's and it is pretty small, so I feel like it would be awkward if I changed to one of the others. Also, my OB's wife is the main nurse for all 3. I have started to look at different OB's and have a few that I will be contacting tomorrow. It is a bit scary to change but I think it will be for the best if I can find the right person that I feel comfortable with.

Yayyy welcome to 2nd Trimester @wabash15 ! I'll make sure you are added to the list.  I'm crossing my fingers that the rest of those symptoms start to ease up for you soon, and I hope you can fit lots of resting in your schedule. <3

I thought I was just rounding up a fart but we actually watched her at a scan rolling around like sonic the hedgehog. It is so much fun and such a reassuring feeling.

@Polythene Pam oh my gosh I love both names! I agree, this trimester has been so much more relaxing compared to the 1st. I'm trying to do everything I can now before I get too big and tired.

@joslynj11 I love your nursery ideas!! Sea foam color is one of my favorites. It adds a pop of color but still feels calming and serene. That turquoise paint color is beautiful and the brick is such a fun idea! I can't wait to see your updates!

@kp214 a nautical theme sounds so fun!! I am sorry about your back aches. I am thinking about investing in one of these, because I get bad backaches as well as my stomach pains from stretching. Still not sure though since its pricey. https://hotandcoldco.com/collections/for-women/products/maternity-relief-wrap

@srh18 so glad to hear that they all look good! It is great to be able to get them checked every 5 days! I'm sure once you start feeling them kick that it will be a drum ensemble in your belly. That is just so much fun to think about!

@stella_700 ahh that is so great that family is helping you put your nursery together! I love gray paint, it is such a neutral tone that always looks timeless. We ended up with a very soft blue-gray. I attached a pic with yellow flowers for color contrast, but I'm just so relieved to have a color picked because that was extremely difficult lol. FX for your appointment on Friday and that they answer all questions!! I hope you get some good rest tonight!

  • @chocolateislife lol that's exactly the feeling, like I'm rounding up a fart. @kp214 My friend swears by her maternity belt, she says it's gotten her through the last couple months of both her pregnancies (each with a 10+lb kiddo). The only problem with them, she said, is that she overheated in them on warmer (75+) days with her second baby, it's a very thick layer to add as we're heading into summer. I've found some relief with K-tape, that bright tape athletes wear (although I buy beige). If you google "k-tape for pregnancy" there are like a jillion ways to tape yourself up, and you can get it pretty much anywhere with a first aid department. I tend to only put it on Monday-Thursday, when I meet with my trainer and do my more intense yoga classes, and then leave it off for the weekends when I'm not quite as active, because it does irritate the skin on my belly where everything's stretching (I put a strip on my lower back, too, and that skin holds up just fine). I tape myself up basically just like a maternity belt, and so far it works pretty well just for that little bit of extra support so I don't feel as jiggly.

@ChocolateIsLife love the gray color!  That maternity belt is Wayne nicer than what I bought. I bought mine off of amazon.  It's pretty good, but that one looks awesome!  I found the back pain and stomach pains get any worse for me, I may break down and buy one of those.

@sasha29-2 that's a smart idea.  I may do that for some added support.  The belt only compresses, so it feels like a tight hug.  I wish it had a little bit of lift to it.  This might do that.  Thanks!

  • @ChocolateIsLife  I'm glad you are looking for another OB, as a nurse who works with pregnant women and new mamas I was so angry when I read your post!! That is absolutely not ok and goes against everything healthcare professionals are taught in regard to patient centered care. That guy is lucky I'm not his patient, he would have gotten an earful and then anyone waiting in the lobby would have too. Unacceptable, what is this 1950?!! Ugh, sorry for the rant, what a douche bag.

AFM, 16+4 and no appts for another 3 weeks, so I'm trying to focus on getting our house ready and making sure we have parental leave stuff figured out. Then it's finding childcare....ugh. I'm a nurse and my SO is a lawyer, you'd think we could afford any childcare, but nope. Finding out that we are going to have to spend around $1200/month, which we don't exactly have to spend, plus we have to decide in the next month or no centers will have openings for us. Blarg!

QOTW: like everyone else I'm excited for movement. Have felt some flutters, but really wanting my SO to feel stuff. Also, I will be happy to look legit pregnant, I've been wearing maternity clothes for over a month and I'm only now getting "oh look at your tiny belly!" comments.....doesn't feel so tiny to me, but apparently it is!

  • @chocolateislife good luck looking into an new OB, and in my opinion awkward be damned, you want someone your really comfortable with and who is not going to make weird comments about brain damage.
@kp214 I had a belt for the end of my pregnancy with the twins.  I wore it all day and took it off at night. I was mostly pregnant in the winter but did not feel it was super hot. Mine was a thinner strechy material. another thing that helped me was swimming (or just standing in deep water). it helped the babies shift and would give me relief. It was actually cool to feel them lift up and then float around. (I have also heard that a deep tub helps too)
@srh18 I'm so glad to hear your boys are doing well! There were times the twins would not be cooperative and we would be in ultrasound for hours.  Wow its crazy to think you have less than 14 weeks to go! I hope they bake for as long as possible!!
@stella_700 feel free to pick my brain any time!

  • @ChocolateIsLife I agree- I think it's time to find a new OB. He needs to know that kind of behavior is not OK. Good on you for taking action!

@PoeMasque We're also in the early stages of figuring out childcare. I think what we've decided is that my Mom will watch the baby for 2 days a week, and then 3 days a week DH or I will work from home, and on those days we'd like to have a "mother's helper" there to give full attention to the baby. No idea where to start with that though. Like, I'll have 12 weeks of maternity leave, so we wouldn't need someone until February 2018... which seems SO far away.

@PoeMasque I hear you on childcare. We've been looking also. The wait time for some places is at least 6 months!  And the price!  Yikes!

@ChocolateIsLife very happy to read that you are considering other OB's.

@wabash15 thank you for letting me know about how long you wore the belt. I wasn't told a time length for each day and can't find consistent answers on Dr. Google.  I had been thinking swimming might also help. Thanks for confirming that!

  • @LeFemmeViolette I needed similar care for my daughter, I was working from home but no way could I get work done once baby was rolling, etc. I've had luck on care.com (stay at home moms looking for side gigs when kids are in school), and my favorite sitter was from the local college job board. She was a labor and delivery nursing student, more qualified than me! I needed 3 set days and had 2 different sitters to cover those for me. So just a few ideas of places to look :)
  • @poemasque the cost of childcare is seriously insane. We are extremely lucky that my mom is a director of a Montessori, so we get free childcare, but the cost would be the same as our mortgage otherwise. I have heard both good and bad things about care.com. One of my SILs had the worst luck finding a sitter, simply because they no called/no showed. I think it must have been a fluke because it was 3 sitters in a row.

  • Omg I am 20 weeks today! Wowza.

After giving it some thought, I think we're going to go with a daycare instead of a mothers' helper. I just feel like there's less unpredictability with this route, and we can get something arranged sooner rather than later. Also- we set a date for the baby shower- Sept 2nd! I always wondered if that day would ever come. <3

Is anyone else using a doula? I decided to hire one just because the idea of giving birth freaks me out. I'm of course happy to have the opportunity, but still scared. Esp because I have emetephobia (fear of vomiting). Every other birth story I read mentions that it's a rather common occurrence and that gives me a lot of anxiety. But we're coming up with coping mechanisms and plans to try to keep that from happening. I also have a very strong willpower not to get sick, so there's that.

  • @LeFemmeViolette woohoo congrats on the halfway mark!!!

Do you know why people throw up during labor? Like is it from pain/the pressure from pushing/meds? I only ask because I always vomit after a surgery from either the pain meds or anesthesia, but the last surgery I had, I told the anesthesiologist that and he put this patch on my neck and it completely took away any nausea. It was life changing st the moment to be honest. It might be worth asking your Doctor about.

  • @lafemmeviolette I've been back and forth on the doula idea. We decided not to even tell our families when I'm in labor unless there's a fairly serious problem, to prevent the delivery room/waiting area from turning into a circus, for all the usual reasons (insane family, want bonding time, etc). But my husband is not good in medical situations with other people (when his mom got really sick, I handled everything with the doctors, he couldn't), and my ability to advocate for myself might, obviously, be somewhat compromised. So part of me thinks a doula might be a good idea, but I don't think DH will like the idea of "I want a paid stranger in the room with us, but not your mother." So I need to warm him up to the concept a little if I decide to go with it. I figure I'll bring it up when we tour the hospital in the coming weeks.
  • @LeFemmeViolette I didn't get a doula with my daughter and at my hospital you have one nurse almost the whole time who is like your cheerleader... but I think doulas sound amazing! My husband gets squeamish so any other anchor person would be great ha.

thats a good question though, will you guys have others in the room? We texted immediate family that we were going into labor (late Sat) but my daughter came close to 5pm (sun) and I was exhausted so we said no visitors till the next day. I think I'll do that again regardless, give us that first afternoon/night with baby and then let others come. So it'll just be my husband at the hospital with me.
  • @ChocolateIsLife I'm just going to echo everyone else here and say that your OB's attitude is not acceptable. If there's a way to see another doc in the practice (or elsewhere), I'd jump at the chance to switch. Blame it on scheduling if that's easier. I'm so glad you're looking at other options.
    @wabash15 Welcome to 2nd tri!
@kp214 Congrats and see you soon on the 3rd tri board!

AFM, I'm 27+1 with the acorn squash-sized little girl. I can't believe it's almost time for the 3rd tri. My birthday was over the weekend, and while celebrating has been fun, this milestone officially moves me into "advanced maternal age" land. I wish they could pick a more flattering description!

QOTW: Similar to most of you, I was most looking forward to feel her move. The increased energy was a bonus, too, although I feel like that may be on the way out for me.

Hi! I'm just popping over from the first tri board as I just turned 14 weeks yesterday!  I am 14+1 with di/di twin...GIRLS! We had to have a CVS because one of our little girls had a high NT and an absent ductus venous and was measuring small. So far her results have come back normal for the main trisomies so we have another scan on Wednesday to see what is going on.

I've had a lot of what I assume are growing pains the last week or so. Sharp shooting pains though abdomen and vagina, but I'm guessing that's normal. Especially for twins.

It's nice to see some of the first tri ladies over here and I look forward to meeting the rest of you!

QOTW: I am looking forward to hopefully getting rid of some of this nausea and dry heaving that I've had since 6 weeks. But, I am also looking forward to feeling them move.

@lafemmeviolette I'm planning on using a doula this time. I think it will be nice just having someone focus on DH and I. Last time we had a scheduled c-section and I'm hoping for a VBAC this time so it will be a whole different experience.

  • @PolythenePam Good question. I think I always assumed I'd let my mom be in the delivery room with my husband assuming no complications associated with the labor. Maybe my sister, too, since I was in the room for her 2nd kiddo (for her first she ended up having to get a c section).
