(Repost from name board) - Jacob ... Please Help Me

I know Jacob is super popular, and my family is discouraging me from using the name because of that, but it's the only name I love and both me and my fiance agree. Should the popularity deter me? My other names are also pretty popular (Matthew, Nicholas, Ryan) so I feel like I might as well use what I love if that is the case. I really wish it was not so popular, but I do love the name so I am torn. I don't know any other Jacobs but I know they're out there. I searched by state and it's top 5 for the past 5 years (at least it's not 1 in my state like the overall list?) The only "unpopular" name I like is Austin, but I don't love it. I gave up on the name Aidan when I realized how popular that has become (but I didn't love it) .... So, do I use the name?

HELP!!!! I posted something similar a while back but now I am VERY seriously close to calling this his name, so I want to get opinions.

Thanks in advance ladies!

  • Jacob was one of my top boy choices. I love it!

  • As a teacher, I can agree that it is a super popular name- but that being said its a classic so I dont think it will be any less used regardless of when your child is born. Its in the same category as Marie, Mary, Michael and Christopher. Regardless of when used, this and other names along the same line are going to be used. If you two like it, whats the problem? Its your child and you are the ones who are using it.. I say go for it. Nothing wrong with going for a classic
  • When it comes down to it, what is the worst that could happen?  So your kid has another kid or two in his class with the same name.  So what?  It's not like it changes his identity.  He'll still be him whether he is Spaceman Jones or Jacob Jones.  I don't think popularity should prevent you from using a name you love.  There is a reason names are popular!

When DH and I started considering Benjamin as a name, we thought about the popularity thing for about a minute and then decided it really didn't matter in the big picture of things and if we loved a name, we would use it.

  • i'm a jennifer....i HATE how popular my name is. there were 3 OTHER jennifers in my kindergarten class and i hated it. even one with the same last initial, so there was always confusion.

also, h's sister and i have the same firstname lastname. it sucks. and several of h's friends are dating/married to jennifers...and it's always "my jenn" "your jenn".... super irritating.

yes, jacob is a classic name, but it's also currently a twilight name.....i'd avoid it for the next 10 years or so!

  • I had the same issue.  H loves the name Abigail.  I was bummed because it has been top 10 the past 10 years.  Even though I don't really know anyone by that name.  I think we are still going to go with it.  I say if you dont have  a problem with having a "popular" name then go with it.  Its your baby not your familes, if  they have an issue with it, too bad
  • Call him a name you love!  When looking at boy names there are fewer names for the same amount of babies with those names than for girls.  I would not let the popularity of a classic name deter me.  It would only worry me if the name was not a classic name.  Plus boys/guys often have nns that are related to their LN or some story.  I would not worry.  Again, name him a name you love!

  • It depends on how much you love it.  We actually loved Jacob and I decided against it due to the popularity.  My name was fairly popular and I had 2 other girls in my HS class with the same name and I hated having to share.

However, finding a good boy's name is difficult.  I really never found anything I liked as much as I liked Jacob and the whole thing turned into a non-issue for us, since I am having a girl.

It sounds like you really love them name and, for you, that outweighs the popularity issue.  If that's the case, then go for it!

  • Honestly, if you love it, use it. When you think about it, of everyone is avoiding it because it is so popular, then it technically is no longer popular. Name him Jacob since everyone else will be avoiding it.

  • The name we ended up choosing is also very popular (Chloe ranks #9 on the SSA chart).  At first, I kept trying to come up with other choices because of the popularity factor, but I just kept coming back to Chloe.  It's the one name that my dh and I both loved the moment we heard it.  We had NO idea it was popular til I looked it up.  Because of that, we've decided that having a name we love is more important than being original.  So, we're embracing Chloe.

My advice would be, if you love it, go for it!
