Contractions, 2cm, 50 percent effaced and lost my mucus plug

So, I had my Dr. Appt. Friday and they hooked me up to the NST machine. It was determined I was having contractions about every 5-6 minutes. Because of this, the Dr. wanted to check me. She said I was 2 cm dilated and 50 percent effaced. She also said I'd have some spotting and not to get concerned. After the exam, I had more than spotting and while I was trying to clean myself up enough to get a pad and my clothes on, there on the tissue was what had to be my mucus plug. Let me just say that was pretty gross. Anyway, I asked my nurse if that was normal right after the exam just to be sure. I know the Dr. said spotting was normal, but I wanted to double check about all of this business. The nurse asked my Dr. just to be sure and she said it is normal and I could have my baby at any time, even this weekend. Today I've felt like I'm having some shooting pains in my cervix and I've had some strong contractions. A few have been about 15 minutes apart, but some are more sporadic. Anyone else in the same boat? I'm pretty uncomfortable now so I'm thinking I'm done with work and she'll be here in the next couple of days. I've been reading the birth stories but just curious if any of you had a similar timeline and how long it too you to go into full-blown labor. I can't believe I'm this close!

Re: Contractions, 2cm, 50 percent effaced and lost my mucus plug

  • I don't know if I'm dilated or effaced, because my doctor couldn't tell at my first exam.  Baby's head was too low & I was in too much pain so she stopped checking.  But I lost my mucus plug last week, and have had contractions for the past 10 days sporadically.  Like you, I sometimes have them closer together, but mostly they are random.  Still no labor for me yet - but that doesn't mean you couldn't go into labor any day.   I've heard it happen both ways.  With LO's head at station zero, I have constant heavy cervical pressure that sends me to my knees....but not into labor amazingly enough.

  • My contractions didnt hurt until they started pictocen and broke my water (but by that point my contractions had been uncomfortable and 1.5-2minutes apart for over 14 hours so it was time to do something to move things along). If you're concerned I'd call L&D most likely its early labor and they'll tell you to wait it out until either your water breaks or contractions are closer than 5 minutes together for a reliable amount of time.

  • Eh, it could be it or it could not be it.

Looks like I am a day behind you and here is where I am at:

    36w4d:  Dilated 2cm and 50% effaced

37w3d:  Have contractions for about 10 hours.  For 2 hours they are 4 minutes apart but slow down

    37w4d:  Dilated 3cm and 80% effaced

Within the time frame above, I spotted after exams.  I have also lost a MP (or lots of something and had to change underwear) twice.

Hope this is it for you, but who knows?

  • Hope this is it for you, and I hate to rain on your parade but I've been in your situation for the last 4 weeks. Lost my MP two weeks ago, spot every day off and on. Still no baby and despite the contrax I'm stuck at 2 cm, 50% effaced. So they'll take her on Wednesday since I'm literally in constant pain and they're concerned about how much longer my body (and baby!) will tolerate the situation.
  • Everyone progresses differently, but you could still be weeks away. I have been at 2cm and 80% for two weeks and am passed my due date looking at induction this week. I know it is very hard (I have been off work for two weeks now just waiting for something to happen!), but just be patient :)
