"Reading" not sleeping

DS loves to "read" books once he is in bed.  He will read quietly in his room at nap time for an hour and then come out sit on the couch and fall asleep watching tv.  I let him watch tv because he is so over tired and grumpy.  At night I let him read with lights on for 5 minutes then with flash light for 5 and then no more books.  Is this the right thing to do?  I want him to like reading but not instead of sleeping.

  • Maybe he's ready to be done with naps.  Both of my kids gave them up by 2.5.  I say that if he's willing to be in his room, quietly looking at books for that nap period, then it's a success.  I really could never get my kids to do 'quiet time' after they were done with naps, so I would have killed for that!

  • I think it's fine.  My only rule for bedtime is that she stays in her room, in bed.  If that means talking to stuffed animals or reading a book for a while, fine.  I have a hard time falling asleep sometimes, too.  If it goes on too long, I go in and try to soothe her to sleep.  As for naps, my DD was fighting them and the doctor said quiet time is just as effective.  As long as it's limited, the TV watching is okay, too.  I use it as a way to get DD to rest when I know she needs it since now she just refuses naps altogether.

  • I love the idea of letting kids "read" at night before bed.  I believe it really sets a great routine in motion and I do the same with my kids.  At naptime, I would do the same thing though - let him read for a set amount of time and then tell him he needs to sleep.  Sounds like he is not ready to give up naps if he is falling asleep infront of the TV.  I personally would take that option away though.  He is never going to sleep at naptime if he knows he can go sleep on the couch later.

I know and I try - but I don't know what to do with him he will do quiet time for an hour and then come out and be happy for 10 minutes and then he is over-tired cranky man.  It starts because I know he need to sleep and then as you said gets into a habit.  I would love advice on how to stop the cycle.  I myself start becoming a crany pants too.
