Double Strollers (yes, it's been asked before!)

I hate that I can't seem to search this message board for old posts!  I know people ask this all the time, but I'm wondering what double strollers you have.

I know the BOB Duallie and the City Select and Phil & Ted's are favorites.  We will probably end up buying a used BOB Duallie just because I love my BOB Revolution and we need something for running, but I'm trying to decide if we would also use a smaller, cheaper one for trips to the mall or places where we might not want the big one.  Do you use a double umbrella stroller (like the Maclaren?) or a sit and stand like the Joovy Caboose?  My coworkers are looking to get us a gift and I was thinking if I could find a good double stroller that is reasonably priced I could suggest that.  Just wondering what might be useful - either now or later on when the baby doesn't have to be in the infant seat anymore.

TIA!

Re: Double Strollers (yes, it's been asked before!)

  • I've owned three double strollers.  One was a sit & stand stroller (Ethan hated it so we seldom used it); one was an inline tandem (used it some, but was very bulky and took up a ton of room); and then I finally bought the City Mini Double which I absolutely loved and still own.  We don't use it too much because Ethan and Jack both prefer to walk, but I do still like to take it to places where we'll be for a while and they may get tired and need to sit.  I just can't say enough about the City Mini Double.  It's compact, easy to use, and my boys love sitting side by side.

  • I have two of the three double stroller and love the City Mini Double. The Graco inline was our first purchase but after using it a few times at the mall, I thought it was too heavy to push. Plus if you want to go to a fitting room it is not easy to maneuver. I did like that it was compatible with my baby carrier and my toddler couldn't mess with the baby when sitting up front. The City Mini is much easier to push and my DH likes to use it more. The only thing is that it I didn't like is that it doesn't have much room for storage.

I've had a number of double strollers, as you can imagine.  The "regular" tandem ones are a beast to push.  I have a Phil and Ted's and used it quite a bit when DDs were younger, but we've gotten to the point where they argue about who sits where and the one in back will kick the one in front.  I have a Combi which is super easy to fold and unfold, but difficult to push with two toddlers.  I recently got a City Mini and I love it!  I wish I got it sooner.  Super easy to fold and unfold, a breeze to push, and the sunshades are great.  The basket is a pain, but when I'm going anywhere I want to take stuff, I just pack modularly (stuff in ziploc bags) and throw in into the bottom.  I've also gotten into using two single umbrella strollers if I'm out with my DH.  Oh yeah, I've also gone with using one umbrella stroller and putting one in an Ergo on my back.

  • So I have a City Select, BOB Dualie and a single maclaren. Love all 3 for different reasons. The big thing for me is that Bailey doesn't like to walk as much as other kids. Even at the zoo, he'll work for a while but then he wants to ride some then walk. There is no way I could go without something for him to sit in.

The BOB is great of course for running and in my opinion if you run with 2 you need it. It's really easy to stear with both boys in it which now adds 55lbs to mine. But it's also heavy and doesn't hit in my RX very well. Bailey is tall and big for his age and he loves this stroller the most. He can stretch out his legs better in this then in the other strollers.

City Select - I love for shopping, we have used it at disney a few times and I lvoe that I can use it for one or both kids. Bryce likes to see me so this stroller is great for that since he can face me and Bailey can face out. If both boys are facing out they can both see which was a huge plus to me. I doesn't feel as big as the BOB dualie either. The bad part is Bailey's knees are in his chest. He doesn't complain about it but I really only use it to go to the doctor or mall now. If we have a third I'll use it as a single and I love the bassinet feature with this one.

single maclaren - we got when we just had Bailey. I still use it mostly when we are goign to speech and I need something for Bryce to sit in but I know Bailey will walk.

  • I don't have anything besides the BOB Duallie and I have never wanted a double for any other purpose than to go for a run.  But then P is a really great walker.  My kids are 23.5 months apart and by the time Isaac was born P was OK walking.  But then she is super tall and super active (much prefers walking to riding) and listens well and stays close by.  I just couldn't see cramming her into a tandem stroller and even now she is reluctant to get into the BOB for my jogs (bc its starting to be a tight squeeze height-wise for her).  I can see why people may want doubles for an older kid (Isaac is definitely more prone to hauling off than P already) but it just wasn't worth it for me.  However, I think all that said, you could probably get away with a sit and stand, even a snap n go sit and stand if they make those.  By the time your 2nd is out of the carrier seat, Brady might be mostly done with strollers since he will nearly be 3.
  • I have the citi mini and love it!  Caroline is super tall, but she likes it when we go to the zoo or even sometimes to the mall.  I have seen some people with the Combi umberella double, but honestly I have the single combi as my umbrella stroller and I hate it.  So maybe the Maclaren is a better umbrella?

  • I have the bob doulie that I love love love.  I actually still use my single Bob and either let Adam walk or just wear ansley in the moby wrap if I need something smaller.  If I were you I would just buy the Bob then wait on the other one to see how you really end up using it.

  • I love love love my City Mini Double.  Last week, I took the kids to the zoo in it and then traffic sucked so I decided to go to IKEA to wait it out and meet DH for dinner.  Both kids were wiped out from the zoo and they both slept in the stroller while DH and I ate dinner and shopped around.  It was awesome.  We agreed that thing was worth every penny!  I have the 2010 model and it didn't have cardboard in the back of the seat.  It never seemed to bother the kids but I stuck a piece of cardboard in there anyway just to firm it up.  I also bought the $10 Sunshine Kids parent console on Amazon.  Works perfectly.  And we used a snuzzler for Sophie in the beginning to make it a little more snug for her.  I didn't bother w/ the carseat adaptor b/c I just use my snap n go and Gavin walks.  My favorite feature is that it folds flat enough to go under the cargo shelf in my CRV:

I bought a Joovy Caboose on CL and thought we would love it.  We took it to disney when Sophie was 8 weeks b/c I wanted to be able to use her carseat w/ it.  Huge mistake.  Gavin hated riding on the back and threw a fit everytime we put Sophie's seat up front.  I ended up wearing her 90% of the time so that he could ride up front.  On the last day, I gave up and rented a stroller for him and we were all much happier.  I put that thing back on CL as soon as we got home!

  • Thanks for all of the input ladies!  I guess we'll go take a look at the BOB and the City Min again and probably skip getting a second one for a while.  Brady is really only ever in his stroller now when we go on walks/runs, so I'm sure we could get away with just a single stroller on many occasions.  And for a while I'll be using the sling and baby bjorn so we'll just see how it goes and what our need is for one.

This is a good plan.  We currently have the CM Double and a City Micro Single and the snap n go.  This has been the PERFECT combo for us.  I use the snap n go more than anything else and Gavin walks for quick trips.  For big outings, we use the double.  For travel, we generally take the Micro and keep the Bjorn in the basket.  That way if Gavin gets tired, we can still wear Sophie.

If Brady likes to walk for the most part and you like to jog, I would spend the $$ on the BOB and keep your single umbrella.  Its surprisingly sleek and fits through most doors, esp in public access buildings that have to have doors wide enough for wheelchairs.  Honestly I would take it to the Mall of GA even - if I were brave enough to haul a 3 yo and a 1yo to the mall.  And if you go somewhere like a fair or outdoor carnival or zoo the BOB would be just fine anyway.  The only minus is that its so bulky even folded so it takes a lot of cargo room when you take a family trip so you really have to decide whether its worth it on the trip or not.  So unless you just NEED to have a tandem I would go with the BOB so you could have the dual purpose jog and walk around.  Double strollers are so $$$$ and take up SOOOO much garage room then I would seriously consider just getting the ONE that suits your needs best and then just making due with the single for outlying situations.
