Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Weight gain question

I don't know if I'm worrying for nothing or not...Colin was a big baby and weighed 11 pounds at birth. He then lost almost a full pound at the hospital and weighed 10 pounds 1 oz the day we were discharged. By a doctors visit when he was three weeks old he had surpased his birth weight and he weighed 11 pounds 1 oz.

I weighed him today at 8 weeks and 1 day (my ticker is wrong) and he only weighs 12 pounds 8 oz! I feel like he's not gaining much weight! He's FF and eats 4 oz every 2 hours which usually ends up being 32 oz a day...sometimes 28 oz. Does this sound normal as far as weight gain to you? We're going to the pedi on the 20th so I'll definitely talk to her about it then.

Re: Weight gain question

  • my lo weighed 8.1 at birth, 7.1 when we were discharged from the hospital, 7.11 at two week appointment, and only 10 at our two month appointment last week.  The pedi said it was fine, she was gaining slowly, but gaining is the important part.  She also said she considers weight gain from their lowest weight.

  • The more I read about babies' weight gains, the more I realize how subjective it is. My DD is EBF and eats, on average, every 3 hours during the day, and she has almost doubled her birth weight at 2 months. She's in the 99th percentile for weight (!). Yet I don't think she is drinking large quantities of BM. She gets bottles of expressed milk (along with the breast) and usually stops anywhere between 2 and 4 oz.

I think that's pretty standard, from what I've read, so I don't know why she's so far ahead of the curve. Especially since she was an average weight at birth (7lb 11 oz). Point is, I think some babies just gain more quickly than others, and as long as yours is gaining and not losing, I think you're fine. Maybe he just had less to "catch up" to since he was a larger baby.

  • my daughter (who is also FF) was 8.6 at birth, 8 even when we were discharged, 8.7 at our first apt and 9.6 at the second.  at her 2 month visit she was 11 even.  they said she is in the 97th percentile for height and 40th for weight.  she seems to eat fine, she is a little finicky though.  but the doc said her weight is just fine, they just have to keep to a curve.  steady gaining, more than the amount gained, is the most important thing.  i know how you feel because i am STILL stressed that she isn't gaining enough, so i go for weight checks at the doctor every few weeks for my own peace of mind.  i am sure your son is doing just fine!  especially if he is a tall baby like my daughter is, it would make sense that they'd be lankier/leaner rather that the typical chubby babies you see =D

  • My 10lb 9oz DS lost a full pound in the hospital and then was 10lb 6 oz at his two week check up.  At his two month appointment he was 11lb 6 oz.  He is breastfed and supplemented with 3 oz of fomula a day, but I wonder if bigger babies gain slower?

  • Anna--our babies have the same birthday, and MaKenna has gained (as of 8 days ago when she was last weighed) exactly 4 lbs since she was born. Considering she only weighed 5 lbs 14 oz at birth (3 wks early) she still isn't too big, but that weight gain for Colin seems a tad low--but it could be that since he started out big--he doesn't NEED to gain that much?
