March 2012 Moms

wheat germ? rec's for getting un-stopped up???!

I've taken Colace, smooth move tea, FiberCon,... A Dr. my mom works with has suggested adding wheat germ to whatever I cook.

Saw some recent posts about Milk of Magnesia - does that work differently?

I've always had this 'issue' (having an impacted colon in high school-not hot!), but the above remedies were enough to do the trick.

If you've got any ideas, I'm listening, and willing to run over to Target during lunch to grab whatever you say I should try!!!

Thanks

  • Miralax has worked for me in the past.  Mixing it with apple juice seems to do the best for me.  Good luck.

  • You can just throw the wheat germ in your yogurt
  • I've been eating a lot of apples actually....at least 1 or 2 a day and I've noticed a big difference! Hope you find your trick!

  • Milk of Magnesia definitely works, but Id highly recommend taking it when you are settled in at home for the night

That's a great idea! I already throw in some almonds as they USED to help....

  • Ground flax seeds in yogurt or smoothies works great too!

Make sure you're close (I mean really close) to the bathroom.  I took it a few days after having DD and, well, there was a messy floor and some ruined clothes involved.

Other than that: water, water, water, Benefiber 2x a day, apple juice, someone suggest V8 Fusion juice.  Good luck.  I know how awful it is.

  • My OB recommended the orange metamucil. Hope it helps!

My OB told me to drink 1 cup of coffee a day - and it works like magic.  I gave up caffeine entirely for the first few months, but she said that can actually contribute to constipation.  She assured me that caffeine is a threshold thing, and up to 2 cups a day is fine.  I'm still nervous and keep it to that one cup, but it's like clockwork now.  Coffee with breakfast, and 30-60 min later I take care of business.  So if you're off caffeine, you might want to try that?  Or at least talk to your OB about it?

Hadn't thought about that - I went off caffeine completely when we were TTC, and then I had a really strong aversion to coffee and haven't thought about it since. Hmmm-maybe I will see how that works!

Also, thanks everyone! I went to Target during my lunch break and got a bottle of Milk of Magnesia based on some of the responses. I'm holding off until I'm home and near my own bathroom (and not stuck in my hour plus commute - wouldn't that be horrible?!)

You guys are the best! I will probably try a variation of all these suggestions until I find what works. Thanks!
