Pregnant after IF

Maternity clothing q...

Newbie over here... So I feel really dumb, since I am seriously 4 weeks pregnant.  But I gained about 15 lbs during my IVF cycle and my clothes are extremely uncomfortable.  I broke down and got a Bella Band, but I think I might have to live in leggings for a while.

When did you all break down and buy the maternity clothing?  Or should I just go buy one size bigger pants for now?

I know I can't be the only one that plumped up a bit during IVF... LOL.  My DH thinks I am nutso.  I swear I am not that girl who wants to wear a "Look at my baby" tshirt at 4 weeks, but I cannot even sit in my jeans!!  HELP!!!

Re: Maternity clothing q...

  • I was at your stage during the summer so mostly wore dresses or shorts pulled down a little bit.  I didn't switch to mat clothes until near 14-16 weeks.  I was also bloated in the beginning but then lost weight once the morning sickness kicked in.  Everyone is different when they start to fill out.  Just rock that bella band or whatever you need to do to stay comfy.  You can probably get away with comfy pants and regular tops for a while.  But if you want to rock some mat jeans, do it.

Old navy has good, inexpensive clothes.

  • Don't worry, you're definitely not alone! I gained four pounds during my IVF cycle, and then another 14 in a week and a half thanks to OHSS. They drained me around 4.5 weeks which took off some of the weight, but I bought a pair of maternity jeans at 6 weeks because my ovaries are still the size of grapefruits and none of my pants fit. I say wear whatever is comfortable :) Good luck and congratulations!

  • Thanks for the encouragement!  I definitely didn't expect to gain so much, but I really cut back on my gym time, obvisously and was seriously eating a lot of full fat dairy and other goodies to get my body ready.  It just packed it on.... I am glad I am cleared to get back in the gym now!!

And I am glad I am not alone!

  • Oh sweetie, I know that pain.  I developed OHSS and put on 15 pounds of fluid in one day, directly onto my stomach.  I looked 5-6 months pregnant already.  I was scared to invest too much in clothes but I had a great girlfriend drop off a bag of some work pants and flowy tops that she wore and it did wonders.  Honestly, I never went back to normal pants and things that I bought in the first tri are still useful today.

I say if mat clothes work for you then do it!

  • I dont remember at what point I made the switch. I know that I wore mat. shirts before I bought the pants. Do what makes you comfortable!

  • This time around I started wearing maternity pants pretty early on, probably around 5 weeks. I had gained IVF weight too. For me they were so much more comfortable than regular pants. If I were you I'd get some now, you'll use them eventually anyway!

  • I wouldn't buy bigger non- maternity clothes, because if you have MS like I did you might lose weight before you gain any more. The MS didn't start until 7 weeks, BTW. I found that some maternity tops and almost all maternity jeans fit me at a wide range of belly sizes :)
  • I probably gained about 5 lbs between my m/c and IVF and am bloated enough at 5 weeks that I need my bella band. I don't plan to break out mat clothes yet but I do have some bigger pants from post baby that I can wear to even out my wardrobe until 10ish weeks.

  • You might as well go ahead and purchase some mat pants that will last you for the next 7 months. I found some that has an adjustable waste band on the inside so I tightened it early on and have been slowly letting them out as time went on. The reason I say 7 months is that you may end up having to buy a size bigger after that.

  • I've gained weight with each of my IVF cycles....I'm hoping this is my sticky BFP! I am 8wks &3 days today with twins...with an ovary measuring 9cm! I felt super bloated at 4wks...got a little better and now it is bad again. I did wear the bella band to church last weekend. I did buy 2 pairs of wk pants in a bigger size, b/c I'm not announcing it to co-workers until a mtg on 11/3, so I'll try my best to hide it from them over the next 4 wks.

I did buy a pair of mat jeans just b/c I was excited, but I haven't cut the tags off yet, but i can't WAIT to start wearing Mat clothes! As soon as we announce, I'll switch over b/c of comfort and b/c I'm so excited to finally need them!

  • I've had a pretty good amount of bloat since IVF, which I think might actually be starting to be a little bit of bump this week.  I started wearing the Bella Band about 3 weeks ago, but last week I started wearing a comfortable pair of khaki and black maternity pants to work, and that was the best decision ever! I would start the day off fine, but by mid-day, I would start to feel really uncomfortable.  I said to myself if I'm uncomfortable, why not wear maternity pants that I'm going to have to wear eventually anyway?

  • Congrats on your BFP!

I am 8 weeks today and started getting uncomfortable about a week - 10 days ago.  I too gained a good bit of IF weight, and this last cycle left me with enlarged ovaries and two cysts.  Wohoo, go me.  So basically even before I got my BFP my pants were tight (and I tend to collect a lot of lard in the hip/thigh/butt area in general, so adding a belly to it turned out to be a not so attractive mix).  I placed an order for Gap maternity pants which arrived today, and I freaking cried when I tried them on.  I forgot what it's like to wear comfortable clothes, and now I don't have to suffer anymore! So yeah, it's a bit early but I am sick and tired of unbuttoning my pants at work, so this is a much better option.
