How to teach your child patience?

My son often interrupts people when they talk because he gets impatient, and also gets upset easily if he has to wait for anything.

What methods are you teaching your child to get them to be more patient? I am sure this is just another phase, but I figured there was something I could do.

TIA!

  • It may seem like you're getting nowhere, but if you're consistently reinforcing it, it will eventually pay off.  If DD interrupts, I wait til the end of a sentence and whisper "Please don't interrupt.  Say excuse me once and wait til I'm ready to talk to you." If she interrupts again I completely ignore her.  Often she just needs a reminder because we've been consistent about this forever.  When kids get to pre-k and kindergarten, it's clear the kids that have been taught and those that haven't.  No 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,.... year old is perfect about this, but it's such an important lesson to learn!

Thank you so much! I will try this and see what happens. He is a pretty good listener, so maybe if I try this method, it will stick.

  • I try to remind her that we're taking turns. "Now it's Daddy's turn, next it'll be your turn"

This is also a great idea. Thank you!

  • We use an egg timer.

She must say excuse me first, but then we will say that it's Mommy and (insert other person if it's a conversation) and that she has to wait for her turn. She came up with "five more minutes" on her own (to extend her time doing something she wants) so we use 5 minute incriments.

I use this with telephone, computer time, cleaning, and cooking too.

  • If I am home and trying to do something like dishes, cook, etc. and my DD is asking me to do something, I tell her as soon as I am finished doing such and such, I will get you a drink of water. I say the "patience" word a lot! I teach elementary school and I see students ALL the time who have no patience because they are given into their request the second they ask for something. Drives me batty to be honest.
