WIC

I've been seriously thinking about applying for WIC, but it's just really confusing to know if I qualify. Financially, I do, but apparently you have to have a nutritional weakness, like anemia, to technically qualify. I'm not anemic anymore because of my prenatal vitamins, but I can't stop taking them just to qualify for WIC...gah.

Re: WIC

  • My anemia cleared before my appointment. I have no nutritional deficiencies, and I qualified. I am married with no children yet. It only saves us about 15 dollars every two weeks, but it is better than nothing.

  • Hmm. Okay, I definitely need to look into it. Times are tough :-(

  • I've been getting WIC since my son was a few months old, i'm bummed that i didn't start earlier but now at least in my area we have farmers market and farm stands that take WIC checks so now that Jacks a year and I've got another on the way we get $6 a month for him and $10 for me then another $30 at the farm stands just for veggies (plus I made his food so it helped that route when he was younger). You just have to meet the financial guidelines to qualify thankfully because besides that i'm healthy enough not to qualify.
  • Okay. Phew. I was seriously considering not taking iron for a while to see if I could qualify based on nutritional need. Bad plan.

You can find out if you qualify for your state WIC program here

To my knowledge I never heard that you had to have a nutritional weakness to qualify, it was based on income alone.

  • It's my understanding that pregnancy is a qualifying factor.
  • The girls and I are healthy and our family meets the financial guidelines.  I am on it now b/c I'm pg, but health/nutritional factors were somewhat needed as well.  The nutritionist at the office I go to told me that she "approved" us and since I understood the nutritional recommendations we were supposed to have (not eating junk food, soda, and candy for all meals), so maybe that is what it refers to? I think that it depends on where you are and the population receiving it.  I have a friend in  Colorado who receives WIC, it isn't even addressed, but here in Memphis I have to talk to the nutritionist every time I go and discuss what the girls are eating - for meals and snacks.  I guess that's what happens when you live in one of the top 10 unhealthiest places to live.  I wouldn't worry about it to much - and definitely don't stop taking your prenatals/iron

I am so grateful for this program right now, it really helps us out.

this! If you qualify financially then you will most likely qualify.

  • I had it while pregnant the first time around- it was very nice!  And I formula fed my son- they give you $120 worth of formula per month once you have the baby.  I do not qualify anymore...kind of a bummer, we are just barely over their limit apparently.

  • If you have to use WIC you have no business having a baby. Pay for it yourselves and leave the taxpayers out of it. It is not our baby it's yours  and your responsibility.
