Baby name opinions thread

Let's keep a running thread today with names possibilities.  Throw them out and people can quote your post and tell you what they think.

(Sorry, this post got really long!)

I made a post yesterday on the Baby Names board (that some of you actually already posted too, thanks!) about naming my little girl.  We have a longish German name that seems to trip most people in the South up.  For this reason, I want to give our daughter a short, easy to pronounce name.  For imagining sake, pretend my last name is Rumplehausen (it isn't quite that cumbersome, but it helps you to get the idea).

These are the names I currently like (but my husband doesn't love all of them).

Sidney (maybe with a y, but we both really like the i spelling, even tho it is masculine)
Clara
Vera
Jane
Elle

However, I'm not really in love with any of these names.  Lately, I've been thinking of putting a name back on the table that I fell in love with last year before we even started TTC.  Isobel.  I was listening to Bjork, and that song came on, and I was like, "omg, I love this song and I want to name my daughter Isobel if I have a daughter."  Then when I realized that Isabelle was the top name last year, I was kind of crushed.  Right now, I'm starting to not care that much.  Isobel is different from Isabelle...  I wonder if a lot of the Isabelles and Isabellas of the last few years will end up being called Bella anyway.  My mom is against the name because she is a teacher and says that having a different spelling of a popular name is going to annoy all of my child's teachers.  I know a lot of you are K-12 teachers, so maybe you can chime in.

My real first name was very popular in the 80s, and in 5th grade there were 3 other girls with my name, and all spelled differently (except for one).  It didn't bother us... it was actually fun.  We had a little Heathers-esque clique.  So maybe it wouldn't be so bad for her to have a popular name.  I just have a VERY STRONG emotional connection to the name Isobel, and I really like it.  I don't feel that way about any other name that we've thought about so far.  I named my second car Isobel after the same Bjork song, and I guess I just have a lot of warm emotional feelings associated with it.

  • I say if Isobel really means something to you, that you should go for it. The spelling is unique and beautiful.

Hell if Mini is a girl her name will be Elizabeth. There are tons of those around, but I have a strong emotional attachment to the name so it is what we will use.

  • We are using Vera as a middle name because it is DH's grandma's name that had passed away. I really like Sidney and I do like it spelled with an i. I wanted to use the name Ella but we have a yorkie named Bella, so I would also say I like Elle off of your list! Good luck picking out a name. I saw mine one day and said that is it!! :)

  • It sounds like you love the name Isobel (beautiful name!) and do not feel connected to any of the other names.

One thing that I did with DS and am now doing with names for these babies is to give myself a few weeks just "sitting" with DH and my top choices. Not discussing them, just thinking abou them and imagining using them, etc. It has helped me to determine which names I truly love and which names I like, but not enough to name my child.

Wanted to add that I am a huge fan of choosing names that are meaningful to you. DS is named after my husband's grandfather and the names we are considering for these babies have meaning for us as well. We also love them, but the fact that they are meaningful to us makes me feel like Teflon to others comments on our names :)

    Caroline

    Lila

If it is special and meaningful to you, I would say go for it. That being said, I was 1 of 6 Megan/Meghan/Meagans in my graduating class and I personally did not like it. No one ever knew how to spell my name, because it is spelled all funny.

I love Elle, but my dog's name is Elleroo... haha.  We call her Roo, but every so often we call her Ella.  It may be confusing, or it may be awesome, I don't know!

I love Kinsley Vera.  Sounds so pretty!

Imogen is a really cool name, I just know I couldn't do it with our last name.

  • Cho - I like Elle and Isobel.

DH and I haven't really discussed names yet - since we need two, its better to find out what they are first rather than stress over boy / girl names if we only need one or the other, ya know?  Of course, we could need one of each!

Some of my top personal favs:
Girls:  Mia, Alyssa, Alexa, Gianna, Emma, Ella, Kayla, Devyn (middle name will be Barbara after my Mom)
Boys:  Mason, Jayden, Brandon, Gino, Dylan, Ryan, Max (middle name will be John, Michael or William)

  • My DH and I have batted a few names around. We are pretty sure we have our boy name, but are struggling with agreeing on a girl name.

Boy: Logan Stanley (Stanley is my FIL's name...not thrilled with it)

    Girl:

    Lily Anne

    Sophie Anne

    Sadie Anne

Ashlyn Grace (this one came out of left field, but I love it).

I like all of these.  My co-worker's son is a Logan, and I love that name (her husband named him after Wolverine... lol!)

  • Cho, I love all your name choices! Love love love Clara and Jane. If Isobel has so much meaning to you, I'd go with it, regardless of its popularity (heck, we're considering Eliana - and that's super popular too!)

My top choice if the baby is a girl is Katerina, nn Katya, after my grandma who passed away over a year ago. I'm also loving Eliana and Veronica. Last time we talked about baby names, DH's front runner was Milana, with a nn Lana, which I don't absolutely love.

Boy names are more complicated right now: I love Roman and Dmitry (we're both Russian, so this would sound great with our last name, but I'm afraid that he may potentially hate having such obviously Russian names... we got rid of Anastasia for this exact reason even though I love it!) We both absolutely adore the name Evan, but we have a 4-letter, 2-syllable last name, so it might sound pretty stupid together.

I really hope this baby is a girl or our poor son won't have a name!

  • I think if you have a real connection to Isobel you should go for it...you and her have to live with it no one else :-)

We know we are having a boy and his name will be:

     Braeden Thomas

a couple of other boys names we liked were:

    Conner Edward

    Gavin Thomas

For Girls names, before we knew it was a boy:

    Kiera Faith

    Addison Cecelia

    Mikayla Cecelia

  • Cho - I think if you really like the name Isobel, then go with it! I really do think it's different from Isabelle or Isabella. Your name pick sounds more romantic and renaissance-ish than the twilight saga name. Out of your other names, I really like Clara and Vera too. If you choose the name Isobel, then when your daughter is older you'll be able to explain to her the significance of her name, and even play the song for her. I think it would be super cute. All I got from my parents was that they named me after Meg Ryan the actress. It would have been cute if I had a story to go along with it.

Okay, I haven't been brave enough to post my names on the baby names board because minus a few women who really appreciate cultural names, most people don't seem to. Please no flaming me.

    Baby A: Dezmond Kenneth McGibobn

    Baby B: Rourke Benjamin McGibbon

Both names are very Irish/Gaelic which was important to us considering our last name and how we want our heritage to be passed on. Dezmond is the name of one of the original clans in ancient Ireland (among some other definitions) and Rourke means leader or champion. The middle name Kenneth is my dad's first name and Benjamin is the name of a friend who passed a way while I was in high school. If we choose to use nicknames, they'll likely be "Dezzy" and "Rory".

  • For a boy we're pretty set on Charles Linden and he will be called Charlie. Charles is the name of my great uncle and Linden was the middle name of my husband's great uncle who recently passed away.

For a girl her first name will be Sophia but the jury is still out on the middle name. Possibly Ellen after my MIL but not sure. I hate that Sophia is so popular but I have loved that name forever (huge Golden Girls fan!) so we're going with it anyway.

  • Personally, I think that having a name that's super common can be easier than having a name that isn't common at all. Trust me, going through school as the only Darla anyone had ever heard of outside of The Little Rascals, wasn't exactly a picnic.

I think Isobel is lovely. Even better than you feel connected to it.

We live in a very Russian community right, and moving to a similar place in a couple of months, and most of the Russian kids in my cousin's HS class seem to be Michelle and Sarah and Jonathan, etc. with a very obviously Russian LN, so that seems to be the trend. But you're right, they probably won't care past graduating HS. NN for Dmitry is Dima, but that might sound a bit too feminine here in the States.

Cho - I'm with everyone else.  Use Isobel!  I love it.  And it isn't the same as Isabelle.

GIRL - Georgia Mackenzie ________ (I am Mackenzie, and so far the contenders from DH's family are Anderson which is his g-ma's maiden name, and... ugh I don't even want to say it....  Magdalena.  It's his great aunt who raised his mom.  I really can't get on board with it though.....)
