I don't know if it's time to find a new doctor for DS. Let me explain, since he was born he has had reflux but for some reason his doctor didn't seem to want to address it. DS would spit up hot clear liquid and they assured me "its fine". It would scare me because he would choke on it so I decided to just try to thicken his formula with rice. If it didn't work I would stop using it. Well instantly DS stopped throwing up the liquid right away. I did that after his two month appointment when the doctor wouldn't give me any advice on what to do. DS has been doing great with the little bit of rice in his bottle.
Now fast forward to his 4 month appointment...I took him in and told them what I had been doing and they weren't very happy with it. They said that since he's been gaining weight and is happy he doesn't need the rice. He told me to start feeding him three meals a day and quit with the rice. I was kind of frustrated because I felt like they weren't really listening to my concerns about the spitting up...but I figured I would give it a shot because I don't want to be doing something I shouldn't. I tried and we were right back to the spitting up of this hot clear liquid. Now I guess I just don't know what to do but I'm thinking its time to find a new doctor. Any advice??
Re: I'm not sure what to do....
Well he said I need to start feeding him solids and he should be at 3 meals a day no later than 6 months. He said I need to stop with the rice though because it is highly linked to childhood obesity. Another issue I have is that they have multiple doctors there so I don't always see the same one and it seems like I have to try explaining my situation all over again every time because they don't remember him...then I'm getting different advice!
If you aren't comfortable or feel like you aren't being listened to, than you need to find a new one. For no other reason then every visit you will have questions or want to talk about things and you will leave every visit questioning yourself or wether you got the information or advice you needed. If you aren't being heard, find someone who will listen. You need to be comfortable with your child's doctor, you will be seeing them for the next 18 years and be talking about sooo many things with them.
I would definitly consider switching pedis. My girls have reflux and it is more of a problem besides their discomfort. My pedi passed us to a gastrointeroligoist after the zantac didn't fix our problem. The GI said that spit up is only the tip to the ice berg of reflux. Basically the food/acid come up and down their throat all day long whether there is spit up or not. My girls cough and this is another reflux symptom. The acid reflux can errode the linings of their esophogus just like chronic vomiting. It is nothing to sneeze at or panic about. My girls get zantac and prevacid to lower their stomach acid and they get cereal to provide some weight to the BM. Your LO seems to do well with just the cereal and that is a great fix if it works for you.
I specifically asked the GI about solids the last time we were in and he said wait to introduce them until 6 mos. Even then he said that one meal/snack a day to start because Bm or formula should still be the bulk of their calories. Jumping right into 3 meals a day seems like a little much. GL
