Tziporah?

Thoughts? It's the name of one of my 4th graders.  I kinda dig it!

Re: Tziporah?

  • I really like it but prefer Zipporah.  I don't like the potential nn of Zippy though.

  • This was in a novel I read about Orthodox jews. It was the main character's name, and she went by Zippy.

  • It's NMS but I really like it! Zipporah was the wife of Moses in the Old Testament, but I think this spelling is legit too. Don't care for the nickname Zippy though.
  • My first thought when I see that spelling is "Prescription Drug."  But I like the Zipporah spelling if the parents are of Jewish descent.  Agree on Zippy though... bad NN.

  • I love it, but I think it's kind of an odd choice if the family isn't Jewish (we're not, so I'd never use it.)

  • Not my fave and I'm Jewish.  Tziporah would be the correct spelling phoentically.  It's not pronounced the same as Zipporah.

  • In Hebrew the name is pronounced Tzi... so that is an accurate spelling. I realize it is a biblical name so it is fair game to anyone, but unke other Old Testament names, like Rachel, Rebecca, etc, this one feels very Jewish to me.
  • I love Zipporah and I've considered it for my own list. I think Zippy makes an adorable NN for a little girl.

Tziporah just looks off to me. It comes off as "trying too hard" (even though they're almost the same!)

But I think it's still good. A very ballsy choice, but I like it.

  • Tziporah would be more accurate.  The name starts with the letter Tzadik...it is pronounced with a tz, not a z.

To me it sounds very old, but I have no issue with it.  For sure, I would assume that a person named Tziporah was from a traditional/Orthodox Jewish family.

  • One of my dear friends has a daughter named Tziporah and they call her "Porah" for short. I think its different and sweet.

  • Tziporah was Elie Wiesel's sister in his book Night.
  • Very old and very Jewish... I've only met old Orthodox women with this name.

  • Love it, I don't think its old or super jewish sounding. Bob Marley has a granddaughter named Zipporah. Cute.
