2nd Trimester

Has your blood pressure gotten higher?

I had a doctor's appointment today and my blood pressure was 140 over 87. It's never been that high in my life and up until a couple weeks ago it always hovered at 110 over 70. My doctor sent me for blood work and I have to go back in a week to have my blood pressure taken again.
Has this happened to anyone else?

My doctor says there is nothing I can do about it and it's brought on by the pregnancy.

Re: Has your blood pressure gotten higher?

  • Nope. Lower. It sucks. I blackout and get really dizzy. Pre-Preg. I was 110 over 70 too. Now it dips below 100 which sucks. I always have to sit and get up slow or I will fall over.

Hope yours doesn't get too much higher :(

  • Yes and in turn I've been put on BP meds. Meds have stablized it, but pregnancy can cause it to go up and, as you probably know, BP is not something to play with while pregnant. They'll keep an eye on the protein in your urine and might do a 24 hr collection to compare protein in your urine now and later in your pregnancy.
  • This- Mine went up around week 30 and I ended up having pre-eclampsia.  Keep up with it and make sure you check in with your doctor often.  Sorry- probably not what you wanted to hear.

  • Mine is usually low low.. like not good low.. and its been about normal every appt so yup mine went up.. I should start taking mine daily to see if its just from the nerves of the appt or the pregnancy!

  • Mine has always be a little under average at 95/60, but now since I've been further along in my pregnancy, I've been around 110/70...or something like that. Don't fret...I'm sure you're fine!

Your Dr. is WRONG.  ::sigh::  You can control your high blood pressure when you are pregnant by eating a high protein diet.   It is amazing to me how little OBs know about proper diet during pregnancy.

When my BP was elevated with my first pregnancy my MW put me on a high protein plan and my BP came down and stayed that way for the rest of my pregnancy (basically from 28 weeks till I delivered- and my daughter was very late).

You need to eat AT LEAST 80 grams of protein a day.  This can be challenging at first.  You will have to cut out other foods in favor of those high in protein.  Meat, eggs, cheese, milk and nuts have protein.  Greek yogurt is great.  I also make protein shakes and there is a bar out there called Think Thin that has 20 grams of protein and no sugar which I eat once a day for a snack.

You should also cut back on food high in bad sodium- anything processed or from a box especially.  A little bit of sea salt added to your food is fine.

If you have not already- cut caffeine out completely.

    Avoid sugar.

Make sure you are getting all of your water in.

You might also want to consider the level of stress in your life- see where you can cut it.

If you don't believe me, consider seeing a midwife or dietician for a second opinion.  You are heading down a dangerous road IMO by just sitting around and doing nothing.  One that could lead to unnecessary pre eclampsia, unnecessary inductions before your EDD and even an unnecessary c-section.

  • Mine was high at my 16 week appointment and the doctor made me go in to see the prenatal nurse the next day to have it checked again. It was still high. I bought a home BP cuff (because I can't use my sphygmomanometer and hold the stethoscope and all that by myself) and have been monitoring at home. My BP has been great at home. I just keep track of it and bring my results to the doctor. If your BP is high only at the doctor's office you probably have white coat syndrome which is very common. Spend the $50 and track at home.

  • Mine is definitely higher since I've been pregnant. Last appointment it was somewhere around 130 over 80 whereas I usually have the blood pressure of a dead person.

  • My blood pressure is always higher (nothing crazy but still something to watch) when I'm at the doctor's office. I get myself all worked up over nothing and it's annoying. I just can't seem to calm myself down when I'm in there. I'm thinking of getting an at home blood pressure cuff so I can test myself when I know that I'm calm and not worried so I can get an accurate reading and know for sure if I do have high blood pressure or it's just 'white coat syndrome', like my regular doctor has told me.

  • My first pregnancy I had pre-eclampsia. I had never had high blood pressure before but when I got to 30 weeks I developed it. At 34 weeks I was induced because my blood pressure got to 200/1??.

Thanks for the info. My doctor really isn't the brightest. I am going to call my old dietician to see if she can make up a meal plan for me. I do tend to eat a very little meat so I can see how I would be low in protein. Thanks again!
