Babies on the Brain

Could I have burned my esophagus?

My throat feels like I swallowed a knife, but not in the strep throat kind of way. It's further down, closer to my chest. I don't feel sick at all. I was eating something a little bit ago that was bothering the roof of my mouth, which I burned the other night on lasagna. I remembered the lasagna and I think the pain has been around since then.

It seems possible but I don't think I've ever heard of this happening before.

  • Could it be heartburn?

    Ha!

    It feels nothing like heartburn.

  • I would think you could.

  • It should have burned all the way down if it was a thermal burn. I too vote for heart burn, even if it seems like it isn't.

Although, you could have swallowed something that was too hot inside, and by the time it got to your lower esophagus it could have opened up and then burned you.

    I vote maalox.

  • I would have to second the heartburn or possible esophageal spasm??  Try some Tums, Maalox, or some milk to see if it helps.

  • I also vote heartburn even if that's not what it typically feels like to you it described mine perfectly.

  • ...Just a question, did you take any medications without much water recently? Or did you lay down immediately after taking it? If so, it could be medication-induced esophagitis.

I had this recently; it gave me a really painful spot (basically an ulcer) that I felt in my upper chest every time I swallowed. The pill I took burned me where it got stuck in my esophagus. It feels a lot like what you described.

  • It seems weird to me that heartburn would be this constant. Alphabet, I take pills every morning and I wonder if that's it. I have to drink a ton of water with them, and i take them early in the morning and go back to sleep. There's a good chance that I was out of water and didn't drink enough.
