Are you still BF-ing both sides each time or just one?

Is your LO nursing from both sides each "session" or just one?  I nursed dd#1 from both sides until nearly 4 months and I felt that was longer than average. I would love to get dd#2 down to just one side each time but I'm not sure when or how to do this. Any tips? thanks!

Re: Are you still BF-ing both sides each time or just one?

  • DD has been nursing from one side only for the last couple weeks....unfortunately I can't really offer any tips because she just started doing it on her own, although I usually change her midway through a feeding (if necessary) and just offer the same side again. The last couple of days she has sometimes nursed from both sides because I think she is hitting her 6 wk growth spurt.

I think it depends a lot on your supply as well, perhaps one side isn't enough? Maybe you could just try keeping her on the one side for as long as possible during a feeding so it signals to your body to make more if necessary or so that your DD gets as much as she can and perhaps it will be enough?

Good luck! Hopefully it will happen with little effort soon.

  • I follow her lead. After she seems uninterested in the side she is on, I burp her. If she is still showing she is hungry then we switch sides. For the most part though we only do one side per "feeding"

  • First thing in the morning and right before bed he will nurse from both sides. For his nighttime at 3-4am he only takes one side, unless he wakes up fully because he poops or pukes.

I only nurse during the day on the weekend, and he snacks a lot. He'll take one side and then nap or play a while and then take the other. I don't mind so much but I wish he'd just go ahead and finish eating at once so I can go on to doing something else.

  • sometimes he just does one, sometimes both. I'm doing on demand feeding and going by whatever LO wants to do for now. As we get closer to daycare (not going to happen until January), I'll make sure to try to get more of a routine and more efficient with feedings.
  • LO nurses on both sides most of the time. The only time she does not is in the morning when I am engorged.

  • DS nurses on both sides every time. Each side produces the same amount when I pump, and that amount is always the same that he took from a bottle. I doubt he'll ever eat from just one side.

  • I have an oversupply, so we are usually only doing one side (sometimes one side several feedings in a row and then switching). Especially at night when he sleeps longer stretches and I am even more engorged than usual... sometimes if he eats a lot during the day he'll take a little from the second side, but that's rare.

I would keep putting your LO back on the same side after burping, changing the diaper, etc. and see what happens.

I was never taught to nurse from both sides at once.  I have only ever done one side at a time.

  • I was taught to always offer the second breast.  LO usually spends about half the time on the second as the first, so we switch off our starting one.

  • Sometimes she'll finish after just One side, usually in the morning when I'm engorged. I let her nurse on one side until the breast is empty and she is just comfort sucking(you can tell bc they stop swallowing) then I switch her. I think they need what they need and you can't control when they stop switching sides. Your milk production and your baby's appetite get to decide for you. ;)
