Who says that to a pregnant woman?

Yesterday a lady I know asked how many weeks I am. When I told her "26" she responded with "Aw, almost viable." What the heck? I had actually already read that my baby had a 50/50 chance at 24 weeks. I've had a miscarriage before, I pay attention to this and it is a bit on mind, but the last thing I want to hear someone else say is that my baby is ALMOST viable. I get that she's the daughter of a Neonatal Specialist and she a socially awkward person, but seriously who says that?

  • OMG what a horrible thing to say to someone!  Geez, sounds like she needs a little "sensitivity training"...like in the form of a smack upside the head.  People can be so completely clueless.

  • Some people have a different feeling about Viability. For me it was a huge relief. Viability is 24 weeks for most hospitals in the US.

I was so excited to reach viability because of my previous losses, but mainly because imagine being in L&D and the doctors not being able to stop your PTL and your baby is born alive but dying and the doctors won't even make an attempt to help your child because he isn't viable?

She didn't mean it to be rude she meant it as it must be a relief.

  • Yikes, that's a little strange and inconsiderate. And yes, I read 50/50 at 24 weeks and also read that by 26 it was significantly higher. Sounds like she is a misinformed daughter of a neonatologist.

I get that. Like I said, I've had a miscarriage so I did feel a relief when I hit 50/50, but the last thing I want is a casual acquaintance saying that to me, "Almost viable," emphasis (at least in my head) on the "almost" so it's not a relief yet, based on her comment. Between her background and her socially awkward ways, I don't think she meant it to be rude, but despite her intention, I didn't like it, I didn't need a reminder that I could still lose this baby and I don't think it was appropriate of her to say.

  • Oh, I should add, anmagyari, this lady doesn't know that I've had a loss, so her comment wasn't meant to make me feel better that I'm "almost there" and neither would she have thought to avoid the comment due my particular situation.

  • I feel your pain...I had a girl (classmate) ask me when I was due, I responded "January," and she said "Oh my sister was supposed to have a baby this past January but it was stillborn." .....ummmm ok? I kind of just walked away without commenting. Again, who says stuff like that to pregnant women????!!!

WHAT?! I almost can't believe she said that, but I've heard so much stupidity, I can believe it. Wow.

  • Well, if it makes you feel better, someone asked me how far along I was and when I told them 27 wks, they said "oh my, you're so small, are you sure the baby is ok?!"  Really...who says that??!!!!  People will never learn!
  • Sorry they said that to you.  Just remember that the last Duggar (19 kids and counting) baby was born at 25 weeks, she is doing just fine now!!

  • Ladies,

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in hearing inappropriate comments. I just wish none of us had to hear them. Thanks for letting me vent here.
