Infertility

IUI landed me in the ER :(

I knew something was up with the pain I had my last IUI cycle! Here's the scoop:

During my last cycle (IUI #1 & 1.2 using donor sperm), I had really bad, sharp pain when they put the catheter in. I thought that it was because the NP was being too rough and actually hit the top of my uterus with the catheter. After DIUI day 1, a few hours after we got home I had extremely bad uterine pain, to the point where I could hardly sit up. I rested and just hung out on the couch and in the early afternoon, after a few hours, it began to ease up.

On #2 of IUI #1, I had the sharp pain again when the NP inserted the catheter, and then had extremely bad uterine/thigh/lower back pain about an hour afterward. This time, the pain was much more intense, I could not get up at all and it lasted the whole day, until I went to bed.

I told the RE that I saw Friday for monitoring about the pain from the last cycle and he was not exactly sure what it was from.

During IUI #2 yesterday, I again had the bad sharp pain when he inserted the catheter. I let him know when I felt it and he said it went in fine and did not hit the top of my uterus; it was when he actually injected the sperm that I felt the pain. It went away, and then when I was laying there the bad cramps came back about five minutes later, only this time they were really bad, I could hardly breathe or talk. I told SO to get the nurse and tell her that the pain was back. When she and the RE came in I described the pain to them and told them that it was similar to last time, only worse, and then I felt sick all of a sudden and started vomiting all over the floor. SO grabbed a trash can and I was throwing up over and over. After I stopped vomiting, the pain was still extremely bad and I felt like I had to pee, so I told them that I wanted to try to make it to the bathroom. So the nurse and my SO walked me to the bathroom and I blacked out completely. When I woke up, I could not hear and I could barely see, everything was all blurry but I could see the RE and nurse slapping my face, but I could not feel it. When I came to all the way, the RE said that I was having an allergic reaction to the wash from the sperm and that I actually had just had cardiac arrest for like, 30 seconds. They were all freaking out because apparently I was laying there completely passed out, but I stopped breathing, my eyes were wide open and just staring at the ceiling and my pupils dilated huge.

So, the RE's office is attached to the main hospital, so they took me down to the ER on a stretcher and they gave me painkillers and monitored my heart and everything, and I got released in the afternoon :(

I can't believe this is happening :( I want to freaking cry right now. I wasn't able to do another round of IUI today, obviously, and if this cycle did not work I don't know that we will be able to do IUI again because the reaction gets worse every time. They told me that was why it was worse each time, apparently when you have an allergic reaction your body develops receptors for it and it is worse every time you are exposed. And we have like, 7 more vials of this donor sperm.

The only thing I can think is that if I'm not pregnant, that they can sedate me or do a local anesthesia or something when they do the IUI, until after the pain goes away, or give me vicoden or something.

Ugh :(:( So now 2ww begins...such hell IF is. Whyyyyy

  • This happened to me also, I was allergic to the sperm wash. They need to wash the sperm in a different solution and you will be perfectly fine. My iui2 and 3 didn't hurt When they changed the wash. Ask if they wash with H A ( human albu....somthing) that's what they had to start using for me.
I know its scary, but its a simple fix in the longrrun. ::hugs::

  • Ps. Im kind of annoyed that you told them about the pain and they continued the iuis without figguring it out. Its dangerous and every reaction will get worse with each exposure. I am so sorry.

Ugh I know! I think they don't think it was as bad as I described or something. They were like, well some cramping afterward isn't completely abnormal. So I guess when they saw what was happening, they were like uh...oops.

Do you know if sperm can actually be re-washed? The vials I have at the RE office were already washed at the cryobank, I purchased them prepped for IUI

  • That sounds terrifying!  I am so-so-so sorry BareBathC!  I am really glad to hear that you are in full recovery mode and I hope you are taking plenty of time to fully recoup mentally and physically.  I am keeping my fingers crossed for you that IUI #2 is worth all this difficulty you have been through!  Tons of hugs!  Recover well!

Thanks, yeah I'm just working from home today and resting. I'm still having some pain. They said that my uterus was contracting over and over again, so maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it pushed the sperm to where it needs to go lol. Oh forgot to mention, the sample count was 49mil...so that's pretty awesome :)

I like your positive thinking!  And, I agree.  I would think the contractions would only be helping that awesome sample count travel high and far toward that special follie!  I go in on Wednesday for my beta and I POAS several times.  By the way, I hate those digital tests that read...NOT PREGNANT.  Such a slap in the face.  Note to self for future testing...no more digital tests.  I think a BFN spoken through lines or lack of lines is better for me.  I really thought this was going to be my cycle.  Sad.

I'm so sorry :( Yeah I stick with reading the lines..well..line. I agree that the whole, pregnant/not pregnant digital tests seem kind of cruel, I don't think I could ever do one of those.

On the plus side, my RE told me that my first IUI, the chances of conception were only like, 15% and they increase to 45-50% on subsequent cycles..so hopefully, if you do another IUI next month your chances will be much better :) That's what I keep telling myself anyway lol

  • yes they can rewash a sample with a friendlier medium.  they did so to y husbands, so cryo shouldnt be an issue.  i dont think you will lose too much of the sample if the DS is good (which im sure it is since you paid for it).  i know when they redid our it was very little impact on sample and i believe it was a better forward progression % when they did..

Got pregnant on our own without Fertility Treatments - January 2016!  Thank you snow storm Jonas!
    EDD 10/15/16
At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

  • Oh my goodness, that story got scarier and scarier the longer I read. I'm so glad you're okay now and even more glad that they have figured out the problem so you don't have to go through this again. Yikes.
2 IVFs & 1 FET. Welcome home baby girl!
  • I am so sorry you  had to go through that -- what a horrific experience.  Thoughts and prayers that the bad kick-off to the 2WW will result in a happy ending!

Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.

IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.

Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

  • How scary!!  Hope you're feeling better soon, and that this is your BFP so that the thought of rewashing isn't an immediate need.
