I was told my progesterone was low but normal and to have it repeated this fall if we are not pregnant. I wasn't really tracking my cycle when I did the last blood work except for tracking my CM, My cycles has been at 27 days. Since my progesterone was low and if repeated would still be low, do you think I should request to be referred to an RE? I know insurance will not pay for infertility treatments and the high cost of it all isn't really in the budget now. What is usually done for low progesterone? What's the cost like?
I have been using a CBEFM and looks like I'll be entering my 3rd cycle using it. I have tested already and of course...a BFN. No symptoms whatsoever. I just need to POAS and move on. I have been TTC since March of this year. I am so tired of every 2WW now.
Re: Low progesterone...what is done for it?
Low progesterone is an easy and inexpensive fix. There are vaginal suppositories that you can take-either daily or twice daily, depending on what they tell you that you need. There is also Progesterone in Oil, which is given daily by an intramuscular injection. Think the Crinone suppositories are a little over $400 per month (for one each day), and the PIO is cheaper-but I don't have the price sheet from the last cycle that I used it to tell you how much, I think it might be <$100 for a 30-day supply.
I would take things one step at a time. It is recommended that you TTC on your own for 6 months before consulting with a RE if you are over 35. I wouldn't wait longer than that, as there's alot of testing most REs will want to do before even beginning treatments-all based on you cycle, so theres alot of hurry up and wait. CD3 bloodwork, HSG, Saline sonogram and CD21 bloodwork are just some that I remember. Not sure how old you are, but if you're over 40-most RE won't let you cycle without a mammogram first. My insurance woundn't cover IVF or IUI, but the would cover treatment, testing and medications. So I wouldn't assume that nothing will be covered, but would recommend calling and inquiring.....but it doesn't sound like you're quite at that step yet. TTC is challenging, the waiting-anticipating, repeated letdowns and repeated cycles of hope and faith can be exhausting. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey of TTC.

Me too. Early on my OB had put me on Prometrium twice a day after ovulation. But when I moved on to an RE they said my progesterone was fine. Go figure.
I really disliked the Prometrium - it made me feel drunk or dizzy. My RE had me use progesterone suppositories twice a day following IUIs.
Delurking. . .
My OBGYN put me on progesterone herself, I didn't need to go to a specialist. I don't believe my insurance considered it to be "fertility treatments" as it covered most of it, but its still $50 for 15 suppositories. (When TTC you use them after O only, so that's about a month's supply.) I got my BFP the same cycle she started me on them, so that was only $50 total for me.
Additional cost: my doc is keeping me on them at least until the second tri, so that's about $100 a month (taking them every day of the month).
If you have 27 day cycles and know you have low progesterone, do you know if you have short luteal phases/LPD? Progesterone can frequently help with that.
