I'm very mixed over the bumper. I have plenty of friends who have used them during their child's whole crib life. I think when it comes to SIDS they try to think of every little tiny thing that could happen to the child, even though they don't know exactly what causes it. They have so many new rules now that I'm wondering how any of us survived as children, much less our parents!

I don't think bumpers are a major concern but the whole my parents and I made it through okay argument is completely ridiculous. The people who didn't weren't so fortunate and they aren't around to talk about it. I'm sure that the medical and safety advances that have been made since our parents were born have resulted in much lower child mortality and morbidity rates.

I don't think they are a big concern but why risk it? They aren't going to roll around for a couple of months so they definitely not needed in the beginning. Once they begin rolling then the breathable ones would be a better choice!
It really depends on the age of the baby. Per our pedi, by the time they can roll both ways it's fairly safe to have a bumper on, but you'll have to take it off when they start pulling up.

Our bumper was used for about 2.5 months.
