Babies: 3 - 6 Months

those that follow the 1-2 hours of awake time?

Just curious as to whether you've figured out some sort of timeline using this yet? Right now I try to aim for about an hour and a half of awake time. Mine totally depends on how LO sleeps. If he sleeps 10 hours, he'll get up at 6-7ish and go back down after an hour until 8:30ish...But...if he gets up in the middle of the night then its a crap shoot.  He also only takes 45 minute naps most of the times making it feel like I am just constantly putting him down for naps all day.

So...my question is...currently my last nap has been falling after 5ish.  His bedtime has been 8.  This nap is generally horrendous to get him down for and I'm wondering if I should just eliminate it and put him to bed sooner?  Thus making him probably overtired for a 6:30ish bedtime...super scared about an earlier wake up too...

thoughts?  lol sorry its tough to follow

Re: those that follow the 1-2 hours of awake time?

  • I have been doing the 1-2 hours of awake time now for about a month. This is our schedule and its been great.

7 wake up, eat, and play

    9 nap

10 wake up, eat and play

    12 nap

1:30 wake up, eat and play

    4 nap

5 wake up, eat and play

7 start bedtime routine asleep by 7:30 and wakes up once in the middle of night to eat.

And now that she is really starting to play - our naps are getting longer. I am hoping to be able to go to 2 longer naps soon. We will see.

  • It would make life much more predictable if his naps would just last a little longer!!  that way I could put him to bed earlier :o) and hope that its easier to put him down.

At least he's starting to self soothe a little better!

  • What methods are you currently using to put him down for naps? FWIW my LO is about your LO's age and he is constantly up and down for naps, none of which he fights me on though. I'm still very much going with a LO-led schedule and not tracking much of anything that way because a) it was too much work and b) I went back to work and he's at daycare. I don't know that I would eliminate that last nap because 630 is a very early bedtime and it would definitely impact his sleep and potentially have him getting up super early.

It may make him wake up earlier...it may not. My LO goes to bed between 6:30-7pm and if he STTN gets up around 6-6:30 and if he wakes once (usually around 4) he'll sleep until 7:30ish. He also used to go to bed around 8 but was having a melt down every night so I put him down earlier and it actually improved his sleep. You never know until you try!

Touche! My LO goes to bed really late (10PM) because I'm terrified of him getting up too early but maybe I should give it a shot!! lol I work so I'm just so scared of not getting enough sleep. Gah. Anyhoo, jsanfran, try an earlier bedtime and let us know how it works out! You might be my inspiration! :)

  • We have been reading the Sleep Lady's Good Night Sleep Tight book, and our 3 month LO has been doing amazing. In it, she says "Sleep Begets Sleep", ie, the more they sleep, the more they sleep. So actually 6:30-7:00 is where we aim for our LO to go to sleep. She has been doing 7-9 hour stretches this week, usually waking around 3-4 am when she's hungry, it's amazing! We discovered our LO hadn't been sleeping enough, and was so overtired all the time, which actually makes babies sleep less.

I hear ya! I think I live in fear of him waking up all night haha. On the flipside...as a working mom havig him go to bed so early means less baby time after work :(

  • I am in the exact same situation and feel your pain. I don't think I will be able to get any sort of consistency until DD can take a decent length nap. Right now I am trying to go in and soothe her through the transition at 30 minutes but only getting partial success. Dont really have any advice, just wanted to let you know youre not alone.

  • My experience is that LOs are awake for longer periods of time as the day goes on.  For example: LO wakes up in am, but goes back down an hour and a little more after.  After that nap, LO will be up for a little longer - maybe 2 hours.  After that next nap, LO will be up for 3 hours, etc.  Just an example.  I find that LO is most awake in the evening unless he had a bad napping day (not decent quality).  I follow LOs cues - eat, activity and when he seems to be getting tired/bored of activity and/or starts to moan/fuss, I get him in napping mode.  If you miss that window, it can mess up that next nap.  This process worked well for DD and works now for DS.  I don't follow a clock because he wakes all different times.  As he gets a little older, I will probably be able to put a round about time on his naps, but now I will just follow his lead and needs.

Is it horrendous because he is overtired or because he is not tired?  If he is not tired, wait and put him down for the night when he is.  If he is just overtired, try to catch him earlier - read him and not clock.  I am a believer of sleep begets sleep.  GL!

Good question.  I would guess maybe not tired...I really try to stick to not keeping him up longer than an hour and a half and let him soothe himself normally for 5-10 minutes in his crib.  Usually I'll look for the first yawn or so to take him up, maybe read a book or sing a song, swaddle him and walk out.  It seems in the beginning of the day to be sooo easy to let him just coo himself to sleep.  Maybe he's just not tired??

We'll see how the day goes today.  We're having a little get together tonight and I bet he won't get as good of a nap this afternoon.  So maybe we'll inevitably just put him to bed earlier.  We'll see!!!  I definately heard Sleep begets sleep and when I started doing these frequent naps I noticed him sleeping longer and longer at night!
