do you leave toys in crib at night? if so what kind?

DD wakes up in the morning and plays in her crib by herself until I get up..  she has 2 side crib toys (a piano and a soother for sleep) I have noticed she likes to play with them when she wakes up from a nap or in the morning.  These are both attached to the side of the crib.  I was thinking about leaving a teether and some other "safe" type toys on the end of the mattress for her to play with... any suggestions.

Did someone say gelato?

  • We give her a few stuffed animals, but nothing hard she could roll on and hurt herself with.

  • We leave one doll in her crib.  It's a soft toy.  However, I'm torn on leaving toys in the crib.  I'm not sure I want to encourage her to have play time in the crib.  I want her to understand that the crib is for sleeping, but on the other hand if a toy keeps her busy so I can sleep a little later on the weekend, that would be nice.  I just don't want play time to happen at 2 or 3am, kwim?

This is how I originally felt, but ended up putting all his stuffed animals on one side of the crib just so he didn't look so lonely in there... I know, really stupid reason!! But I'm glad I did because he doesn't pay any attention to them when it's time to go to sleep, but when he wakes up in the morning, it keeps him occupied for a short time while I get myself up and into his room.

He has a knit blanket, a stuffed pug and one of those blue musical seahorses. We used to have this Baby Einstein thing that attached to the crib and played music and would light up, but he kicked the shiit out of it and it finally died.

Stink is awesome! Ethan did the same thing to his.

  • Juliana has an attached changing table that is connected to her crib and we have two stuffed animals and her doll sitting on it. If she wakes up in the morning before us and wants to play she will pull them off her changing table. She also plays with them at night when she is fighting sleep but if it's at night I will go into her room after she has fallen asleep and remove the toys from her crib and place them back on her changing table.

    This exactly.

We give her a stuffed kitten, a stuffed bear, a musical seahorse, and her two binkies.

Most mornings she'll "play" by rolling around, standing up, sitting down, attempting to do sommersaults, and whatever else she can think of to entertain herself.

  • I have a lovie, a stuffed animal, and a soft cloth teething type stuffed animal.  I don't like putting anything hard plastic in the crib, because DS can roll over and sleep on it, which wouldn't be very comfy or poke himself with it.  It's not a huge safety risk, I just don't want him to wake up and cry from sleeping on a hard toy.  He loves to wake up and play for a few minutes every morning, so that gives him something to do.

This is a really good point.  I was worried about this with my first son.  I just try to really limit the toys to one or two.  Actually with DS1, I think we put a board book or two in there eventually.  When he woke up in the morning, he would just "read" quietly for a long time.  I think it's kind of good for them to play alone sometimes.  I think it teaches them that they can be safe even without mom or dad around.  Just stick to one or two toys and make sure they aren't overstimulating.  Stuffed animals, lovies, and rattles I think are good choices.  A battery powered singing laptop... not so much.

  • I leave a few stuffed animals, the seahorse, a rattle, his lovey (a clean burp rag), the Scout bedtime book and a blanket... He is usually very content in the morning playing with that stuff... :-)

  • My daughter is 10 months and I guess before she even slept in her  crib she had like 2 bunnies at the other end of her crib and now she has 2 stuffed bunnies a doll and 2 blankie animals..the only time she even touches them is if I leave her in her crib to go to the bathroom..but she'll have anything she can grab in there with her. I don't think its a big deal, it keeps her company when i need 5 mins to myself

  • Nate has a teddy bear in his crib. It's actually a back to sleep bear with the noise thingy removed. He loves it. He used to just lay there and talk to his mobile but we just had to take it down. My DH went into get him the other day from a nap and he had pulled himself up using it, and was just "hanging off of it" as my DH put it. LOL
