Bottle Weaning/Sippy cup issues

I originally wanted to give my 1 year old a sippy cup months ago, starting about once a day, so that when weaning time came it wouldn't be such a fight. We bought a sippy cup, and I think DH tried using it once. (We had bought a spill proof one). The first thing I hear when I come home from a class is ''did you try to suck on it? It is really hard! He can't use that.'' I am almost positive that this was something pointed out to him from his mother---he will not taste or test milk in the bottle, so I highly doubt he did it from a sippy cup. This frustrated/discouraged me so I stopped trying. We recently had our son's first dentist appointment and they said he is too old for the bottle time to start weaning. I suddenly realized what a mistake it was to listen to DH's negative remarks about the sippy cup. Now that my son has teeth, he just wants to chew on the sippy cup tip. I am not sure he realizes he needs to suck on it. I took the stopper out of it, so he would understand that there IS something in there. I thought if knew there was milk in it, he would try harder to get it. But when I take the stopper out, milk comes out too fast and he chokes a little bit. Then he doesn't want to drink anymore. I need some advice, or maybe even better sippy cup brands to make this transition easier for me and son. THANKS

  • I don't know what brand you are using but we started out using Playtex with a hard spout and handles, and Nuby with a soft spout and no handles with DD. We went cold turkey by dipping the spout in the milk/formula so that she would know what we were giving her. At first she was mostly just gnawing on the soft spout but she really got the hang of it within a couple of days. Good luck!

  • We started put with the Nuby brand, and no she really likes the take and toss cups. It will take some time and practice for him to get it down. My DD struggled at first. Put something in the cup that you know he likes to drink. In a few days, he will drink more and choke less. Set a goal for a month or so to transition, just let him figure it out. Expect some coughing, frusteration, spills, and some spitting the liquid out. It is all practice, and it means he is trying to master it. Try a variety of brands, and try not to worry. You are doing a great job mama. I am sure there are a ton of moms out there with the same issue. Good luck.

  • My son would only drink milk from the Nuk Active Cup

He drinks water from the Playtex Easy Straw Cup or the Take and Toss Cup.

  • I use playtex straw cups for water and tommee tippiee cups for milk.

Once i knew he was comfortable with drinking water for a few months we just stopped bottles cold turkey on a long weekend.

  • We tried the hard spout ones at first too and he didn't figure out that anything was in there, just kept chewing on it.  I went and got a cheap sippy with a soft spout and he chewed on it but stuff would come out when he did so then he realized if he sucked on it more would come out.  It wasn't as spill proof but after a bit we were able to stop using that one and use the hard spout one.  You could also try a straw sippy.

Try this one.  It's similar to a bottle with a clear spout, and it helped DS figure out how to switch to sippy pretty quickly.

  • I tried the playtex cups with the straws first. DS did well with them. He now uses tommee tippee cups. But I think the straws might work. Good luck!
