bf & sttn

Do bf babies sttn? Is it okay for them to sttn? These questions sound so dumb now that I wrote them out. Last night DD nursed at 10pm then again at 5am. That's 7 hours! She was awake for a good 3-4 hours before 10pm, so I"m sure she was exhausted, but she's gone 5 hours before too. Just wondering if it's okay or I should wake her. (or wake myself and pump)

Re: bf & sttn

  • My dr says it's fine as long as she's gaining.  DD has done this a few times.

  • As long as she is gaining weight isn't fine.  YAY for sttn!!  Logan is pretty good about it.  The longest he has gone was 9 hours.  DH and I woke up like "OMG! He is breathing!!!!????"  He was just snoring away.  lol.

  • like other ppl said, as long as she's gaining weight its fine. my pedi had told me on the first visit that after she was a month old it was okay for her to sleep as long as she wanted at night. then when he saw how she was gaining weight he said it was fine at 2-3 weeks old.

  • Yep all the above, my pedi said "i' never tell my moms to wake a baby to eat, they are sleeping for a reason". If you are needing then i'd pump, if not let LO sleep! Mine is 9 weeks and sleeps about 5-6 hr intervals, so i'm jealous!

  • Same as what everyone else said...but be careful! I've woken up to a soaked through shirt several times! If you feel like you need to pump when you are woken up I would just because it is a sticky mess...trust me...

Definitely pump. LOL, it's amazing how much can come leak without you doing anything!

  • Last night I nursed at 10:30 and my LO didn't wake up again until 5.  I got up at 4:30 and pumped a little off each breast so I wouldn't be in pain (I have an abundant supply), and then I fed him off one breast, and pumped the other one completely.  I coincidentally had an appt with an LC this morning and she said that's fine, or you can just pump only to comfort...or, if you're not uncomfortable, you can stay asleep and just feed your LO on demand.  No need to wake her if she's gaining/thriving!  GL!

  • Thank you for all your responses!!! I guess I was mostly worried about my supply dwindling, but as long as she seems content then I'll let her sleep.
