And I agree with the shots thing. Yes it hurts them, but it is for a split second and they won't remember it so who cares? I don't fault anyone for being overly sad/concerned for their LO on it but I don't really get it.

Re: the shots, I'm more concerned about LO getting a fever afterwards and being uncomfortable for days.  But I also hate being the one to subject her to pain, even though I know it's for a good reason.  I'm just an emotional person though.  I cried when, after LO's umbilical stump fell off, there was a little blood.  The thought of something being wrong with her or hurting her makes me really sad.  I didn't actually cry during her shots though.  They weren't nearly as bad as I'd anticipated.

I must have missed the bib post? I put her in a bib in the carseat all the time, but I'm open to correction if there is a good reason I shouldn't?

It was a post about a week ago about not putting a bib on your LO when they're in the car b/c they could smother themself with it. In particular, never put the bib on top of the car seat straps.

My DS throws up every.single.time. we put him in the car seat. We always put the bib on top. He generally falls asleep within a couple minutes in the car anyway. And really, I'm sorry to the poster who put that out here b/c it was on this board. If it worries you, don't do this. I'm sure that it *could* smother a kiddo but it seems so minute. And like you, Sunset, I may use bumpers down the road. LO is too little now but in another few months, if he's sticking his limbs through the crib, we will use them. My pediatrician laughs about how skewed most SIDS info is and how people have gotten hung up on some really odd things related to SIDS and how bumpers are one of those things (he says).

  • In regards to fruit instead of candy, I agree that having healthy alternatives is awesome, but I also strongly believe that children need to be taught moderation and self control when it comes to food. As a child my mom didn't allow us to eat certain things and I remember looking at sweets longingly and eating it at friends houses whenever I could...and when I did I would eat a lot because I felt deprived of it. My mom would pack me healthy lunches and snacks and instead I would use my saved money to buy junk because nothing "junky" was ever at home. Now as an adult I still can not really self moderate when it comes to sweets. it's a problem and I always struggle with it. I am not saying during Halloween and Easter kids must get candy, all I'm saying is that parents should maybe use opportunities like that to help teach their kids self control and moderation. Think of it as a learning moment and your perspective might change. I usually only give fruit as desert to DS1 but we will occasionally go out for icecream or give him a cookie once and a while and when Halloween comes around I'm going to throw away half of the candy and then use the other half to help teach him self control (obviously it'll be a simple way since he's not even 3 yet, but every moment is a valuable teachable moment so I'm not letting it go to waste!)

My UO: Minivans are the bomb! We just got a new Sienna about three weeks ago and I have never been happier. It makes my life SO MUCH EASIER and I don't know why people have such negative stigmas about them.

  • I think organic baby food is a waste of money.  I figure all the kids who grew up before the organic craze survived and so will my LO.

I hate Star Wars, in all forms and variations. Actually most of the sci fi genre annoys me. I also don't get the whole Godfather craze, I think it's dumb.

Me too.  I can't stand Sci-fi stuff.  I also don't see the point of Harry Potter and Twilight.

I can see why you would think that, but I believe it's a very misinformed view on the current state of food today. I'm not going to get preachy but if you're willing to learn more about why organic is not a fad or a waste of money I would be more than happy to help!

I get really tired of all the fear-mongering regarding parenting (and sometimes, I think TB is totally guilty of this). Sure, we all love our babies and want to do things right but there are a lot of things that people get really hung up on that are not worth worrying about IMO.  Sorry ladies, but the "never put a bib on your baby when in the car" was one of those to me. I know I was in the minority by the thread but I just don't see how that's super-risky.

ha Callie has a bib on every hour of the day, well except for at night when she's asleep in her crib. She is a BIG drooler and spit upper. She has a bib on at all times in the car seat.

same here.  we also have a mirror (gasp!) so I can see if the bib would be up over his face (which, it never has been)  but if I didn't have one on him in the car, the straps would have long ago been ruined, or had a horrific smell to them at all times.

We totally have a mirror in the car too...and really don't see the big deal. If I worried about every little thing that could POSSIBLY go wrong and be unsafe for LO, I would never leave the house.

Food has changed over the years. They put more crap in food and use more alternative methods to make things grow faster and bigger than they did.

Watch some of those movies about how chickens are raised, etc that are out there. You may just change your mind.

My Stepdad has been battling cancer for over 2 years now. A Dr mentioned to him about changing his diet and becoming vegan and only eating organic. It helped him immensely. Shrunk tumors, etc. I have no doubt in my mind that the sh*t they put in foods nowadays is contributing to cancer and other diseases.

  • I have a mirror and I don't always remember to put the handle all the way back.  I don't worry about it too much.  I liked knowing that if she's screaming it's not due to something bad, just that she's hungry or cranky.  Also the little monkey on the mirror keeps her happy.  When she's happy, I'm happy and we get stuff done.

Also- I agree with the diaper thing.  My LO is always hot too but putting a thin onesie on is not going to make her any hotter than just letting her run around in a diaper.

I watched WifeSwap last night so it made me think of this one.  I completely agree with Homeschooling if it is done in a responsible way with making sure your kids are hitting educational age appropriate checkpoints.  However, unschooling seems like it borders on child neglect to me.

EXACTLY!  Do people realize that while they are worried about a mirror, they should probably be more worried about getting in the car in the first place!  The risk of getting into an accident are much higher than that dang mirror doing any harm.  Ours is plastic.  It has a cushioned rim.  Plus it clips on to the back of my car.  It it were to hit A somehow, I don't foresee it doing much damage--if any. I like the peace of mind I have when I can see her.

What kills me is when people throw out the whole "there should be no loose objects in the car" bit.  So what do you do?  Put your entire purse and everything you have in the trunk? Never stop for coffee?  Never put your cell phone in the cup holder? I'm sorry, but no.  It just is not going to happen.  I can't worry about every single object they may fly around in case of an accident.  I just can't do it.

And supermom83, I wouldn't be mad if you got a little "preachy" on us.  I agree that there is so much crap in our food.   It makes me angry.  There was a time when today's organic food was just food.  Now we have to pay more for the stuff that should have never been messed with in the first place.

I only agree with that to an extent.  If there were an accident, lots of different things could potentially harm anyone in the car but I made it a point to take out anything that could do a lot of damage.  For instance, we had scissors in the car (no clue why) and garment hangers from the store and those were taken out immediately after the danger was pointed out to me by the police officer who installed my carseat and went over safety things.  She told me a story of a little boy who almost (or did? can't remember) lost his eye because a cd case hit him during a car accident.  She suggested when I'm the only one in the car to buckle my purse into the passenger seat so if I were in an accident, that stayed put.  With that said, I still don't buckle my purse or leave my cell phone in my purse but I will not leave sharp objects or anything with a rough edge in the car anymore just in case something were to happen.  I'd rather take the extra 10 seconds to throw it in the trunk if it's really that important that I have it with me.

That's exactly my point though.  Just use some common sense.  Scissors--that for sure makes sense to not have in your car.  I was just trying to point out that you can't worry about every single little thing.

I agree w/ the bolded parts.  We never had much junk food in the house and we rarely ate out.  When my parents did buy us snacks they never lasted long b/c my siblings and I would gobble it all up in 2 days.

    My UO:

I love the smell of uncooked baby cereal.  I used to love stocking it when I worked for TRU so I could smell it fresh from the case.  Even with the plastic on it, if you squeeze a box the smell comes out.  I haven't smelled it in so long *sigh*.  I also love the smell of new text books- or books with glossy paper.  I think these smells both remind me of my childhood.  I remember liking the book smell even when I was young but I have no idea where the baby cereal thing came from- maybe I smelled it when my brother was eating it?

  • I just have to laugh at myself right now.

I am a pierced, tattooed 33 yo mother that is an organic vegetrian that loves it when her baby is just in his fluffy butt around the house and allows her daughter to sleep in just her underwear. I also not a germaphobe but a neat freak  that allows things in my car and bibs on my baby while driving. Devil

    Haha.  Yes Love it!!!

I, personally, love a naked baby/toddler in the privacy of their own home.  Out in public, put some clothes on.  At home, it's your choice. lol :)

  • I have heard more than enough (practically shoving it down my throat) about organic baby food from my SIL, I just don't see us spending the extra money on it and it really being that much better.

THIS! Except I don't have my piercing anymore and that's only because they closed when I was in the hospital. And I miss them every time I look in the mirror. Not a vegetarian anymore but have been contemplating going back. And definitely not a neat freak I'm a pack rat.

You could make you're own. It's super easy and cheaper than regular baby food. And you could get organic that way your daughter has healthy and so does the rest of the family.
