We are in the process of getting DD her big girl furniture and I'm just wondering how everyone spent/is spending. I want good quality furniture that I will not have to replace in a couple of years but I didn't realized how expensive it all is.
Actually I bought my SD's big girl furniture from Target and am amazed at how sturdy and well it has held up already-it was already better quality than some of the stuff I looked at in retail stores. I probably spent around $450 getting her room ready. I would really suggest trying craigslist-people sell their really nice kid furniture on there all the time as they get older and its always much cheaper than getting it from the local furniture stores. I bought her a dresser, night stand and toddler sized sleigh bed along with a big shaggy pink rug, bedding set (I stayed cheap on that one since we're pottytraining) and a matching lamp and it turned out great.
Honestly I had a hard time wanting to spend a huge chunk of change on her furniture this early on- love her but toddlers are ROUGH on their things.

I'm all about the budget, and using my money on doing fun things together (and eating great food!), so I've done it all super cheap. We got a moses basket as a hand-me-down, and a cheap dresser as well (which was perfect height for a changing table, so it doubles). I had a rocking chair I'd pulled, I kid you not, out of a dumpster in college and paid ($60 I think) a carpenter friend fix and refinish for me. We got LO's current crib, mattress and sheets off craigslist for $30. And it's a canopy crib which makes my artsy side happy.
Now I'm looking for a twin bed, or maybe a toddler bed off craigslist. I'll prob buy the mattress new this time and just get a cute fame used. I feel like toddler beds are pretty pricey and sometimes they don't get used for long, so I'm only considering it because our bedrooms are super small.
i'll probably be of no help as dd's bed/mattress were free to us. she's got a queen sized bed frame (wood headboard & footboard) and a late model temperpedic mattress.
i want to get some shelving but that i know i can get on the inexpensive side at target. my take on kids furniture is that its kids' furniture, it's going to get beat up, scribbled on, etc. so spending alot is pointless.

Solid wood furniture is extremely expensive. The only reason DD was able to have it is because IL's offered to pay for it (DH is an only child, so they have no one else to spend their $$ on!). Truthfully, the twin bed, nightstand, and dresser with mirror were over $2k. We would've never been able to buy it ourselves.
We got her mattress at Costco for less than $200, and a few accessories (like a piggy bank, a table lamp, etc.) at places like Target or Walmart. Everything else came from her old room.
ETA: There used to be a company called This End Up that made solid wood furniture. My parents did all the bedrooms with it when we were little, and those suckers are still around and look brand new. At the time, they were cheaper than other furniture (I guess because they were plain & not painted?), but they've painted a few of the beds & they look really nice. If you could find used This End Up beds online, I would definitely buy one. We would've taken one of my parents' if my IL's hadn't offered to buy DD's furniture.
DD's big girl room will be the same furniture as her nursery since we fully intend to continue converting the crib. We will be converting from the current toddler bed to the full size bed on her third birthday.
With that being said, we spent around $2,000 for all of the furniture. I wanted quality since I knew that she would have it for a long time. We have the bed (with the conversion kit), nightstand, dresser, and hutch.
We do still need to get a mattress before her birthday.
Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in.
& Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.
We spent about $1000 at PBK for DS1s furniture (that included a 20% off friends and family discount). We got him a twin bed, dresser and nightstand. We had an extra twin mattess so that wasn't included. I'm pleased with it, although the top of the dresser scratches easier than I would have thought.
I'm just hoping I don't regret buying him a twin bed.
One reason I went with the PBK stuff is because we'll probably be buying DS2 a matching bed & dresser when he gets a little older and their furniture lines are guarateed to be in stock for so long.
We paid $500 all total for his twin mattress/foundation/frame, we are going to refinish a used maple dresser, and probably a bedside table that we got/will get at Salvation Army for as cheaply as we can. I want good stuff, but at the same time, he is going to beat the heck out of it, so why buy new?

$0- for her actual bed (its an antique bed we got from my grandmother)
$160- or so for her mattress
$40- for her bookshelf and a 5 drawer dresser (got these from a family that my friend works for)
I probably spent an additional $50 on her rug and about $100 on her quilt, sham, and 3 sets of sheets.
