This may sound real silly but how long does it take for the sperm to reach the egg?

    You can usually feel it......

No, but for serious, I think a few days.

  • I am having very light cramping and was really curious to see what my temp would do this morning.. only to wake up to a dead battery! So I hobbled out of bed a few steps to get my regular thermometer. I laid back down and got a 97.9 which I knew was at least 10 degrees higher than it really would have been. So I knocked off 10 degrees and marked sleep deprived. Just annoyed.

Sperm usually reaches the fallopian tube and the egg within a few minutes after ejaculation.

  • So here is my dumb question...

I got two positive OPKs in a row but they were exactly a week earlier than FF prediced my O date to be ...

I just started temping today, so I don't know when and if I Oed.

Should I test this weekend (It would be 2 weeks since positive OPKs) or just wait to test when FF predicts that AF would show up (Which would be in second week of Oct)...

    hope this makes sense ...

  • My chart really frustrates me. I woke up an hour early this morning (which is why I have an open circle) but I highly doubt that is why my temp was so low this morning. I'm only 9dpo! I don't want to start my period yet! *whines*

According to Discovery Health, the fastest the sperm can reach the fallopian tube is in 30 minutes.

No, but for serious, I think a few days.

Hence the need to BD (or have sex...) in the days before and leading up to O.  I always wonder about our timing.  That's why I started temping and OPK'ing this month.  I hate not knowing.

I'm sorry but a few days is incorrect. The sperm meet the egg within a few minutes of ejaculation.

You need to have sex in the days leading up to O because sperm can live for quite a while, up to 5 days (in perfect conditions). Having sex in the days leading up to O makes sure that there are sperm present when the egg is released. Eggs only live 12-24 hours.

I would probably test this weekend. If they are negative just wait another week or so and test again. Have you temped in previous cycles? If it's your first cycle temping FF is really just guessing.

hahah.. yeah I have tested it.. temping as soon as I wake up then after laying there for a few minutes.. it usually goes up a few degrees.. So I assumed with getting up and walking it would have jumped.. who know how much. My LP was only 10 days last cycle.. I guess I will just have to wait still to know.

How important is it to wake up to temp at the same time every day? I keep getting open circles on temps, but it's physically impossible to wake up at the same time every day when you're breastfeeding. I'm usually within an hour of 5:15 am, FWIW.

Are you getting at least 3hrs straight of sleep prior to temping? If you are & the time is not varying too greatly I think you will still be able to see your shift.

I know it's still early and I could still O, but I have a history of anovulatory cycles and I was really hoping for a "normal" cycle for once. I hate that this sh!t is making me a crazy.

Here is a link to a chart on POAS.com https://www.peeonastick.com/hpts.html

It is best to use FMU for a HPT because that is when your urine is most diluted. If you test early with afternoon pee after drinking and eating all day your urine may be too diluted for the test to pick up the HCG. If you are testing later it may not matter when you test because the HCG will be so high.

OPKs can be frustrating. How many times a day are you testing? If you are only doing 1/day I strongly suggest doing 2. At least until you know how your LH surge is. For example, I used OPKs with FMU & at 4pm. I would get a few days of + with the FMU but never once did I ever get a + with afternoon pee. No matter how long I held it.

I test twice a day. Once in the afternoon around noon and again when I get home from work around 4:30/5ish. Maybe I should start testing with FMU and see what happens. Thanks for your response!

Not always. DS wakes up at different times each night. Sometimes I get 2 hours, sometimes 4. That's kind of why I wanted to wait to temp, but oh well. At least I'm getting some practice in now.

I would just do the best you can. I would make sure to chart your CM, CP (if you can) and do OPKs. This way if your temp is wacky you have other signs to back up/predict when you O.

  • OK, I have a question.

There's a piece of advice that is often repeated here (and has been ever since I joined TB) in response to the do-you-think-I'm-pregnant posters: "If you're pregnant enough for symptoms, you're pregnant enough to take a test."  The idea being that a negative pregnancy test means that one's symptoms are phantom.

My question: What's the source of this advice?  It makes a certain intuitive sense, of course, but I've never seen it anywhere other than TB.  Where's the book, or website, or whatever that says things like "hCG doesn't cause physical symptoms until it's present in the body at high enough levels to be detectable by a pregnancy test," or "a woman doesn't produce any more progesterone during the first days of pregnancy than she would before a period," or something to that effect?

Not trying to turn TTGP into babygaga here, honest.  I'm just genuinely curious -- and Dr. Google was no help.

I don't know of an actual source & don't worry TTGP will never be babygaga.

HPTs actually are very sensitive to HCG. If you are having real pregnancy symptoms the HCG would be high enough to turn a test +. I also think you might be reading the "advice" incorrectly or it isn't being stated quite properly. Very early pregnancy symptoms are extremely similar to PMS symptoms. While the mind does can play tricks on you the fact is if you are having symptoms of pregnancy, your test would be positive. If you are having symtpoms of PMS, your test will be negative.

Either way, in response to the "am I pregnant" posts, no one can answer that question either way. If you just peed on 35 sticks and the test said negative then at that very moment you are in fact not pregnant. There is also no way to know if a symptom is pregnancy, phantom or PMS until you get a + test.

I think a lot of times people respond this way when the OP is saying that they are throwing up or some kind of symptom that almost never presents iteself before about 6 wks.  At that point, you should be able to get a positve HPT.

I used to start spotting around 3dpo every freaking cycle, it was ridiculously annoying. It can be caused by many things and can sometimes be a sign of low progesterone. For me it was nothing.

I know my temps were consistently (sp?) higher for 3 days in a row after the O date, but  my temps rose pretty high two days later. Poor logic, I know, just paranoid that I missed my opportunity. I'm glad you agree w/FF though Smile
