How much do you spend and what to buy at a MoMs sale?

I'm 29 wks pg now w 2 girls, and hoping to go to a MoMs sale in a couple of weeks, and wanted to budget for it.  We have one of everything (I have an older daughter), we're planning to get a new carseat, and dh has already gotten a DSNG and a second baby vibrating seat.

I cant think of what to buy aside from clothes.  What should I be looking for and on average, how much do you think I'll end up spending?

  • I went to ours with $100 and left with $100. I was incredibly disappointed. Like you, we already had a DSNG but I was looking for maybe some neutral newborn clothing (#1 was a 9 pounder, so we don't have much in the smaller dept.) and any other "gear" that I thought would be useful that I didn't have to buy new. Unfortunately, all of the clothes were VERY worn and VERY overpriced. Bummer!!

I know that doesn't help you at all... I think I'm just venting. :-P

  • My local MoM sales are very hit-or-miss, and mostly "miss", unfortunately. I also take $100 (not incl gear) and usually don't spend that much. Maybe half that. My local sales are in the spring and fall so I don't buy clothes far in advance - just what I think I need for that season. I learned my lesson on that after going wild on garage sales and buying a bunch of stuff that didn't fit in the right season.
  • I usually spend about $70.  My older daughter was born during the completely opposite season, so I had to buy a lot of clothes for the twins.  I also buy clothes for my older one.  My MoMs club has great prices so I come home w/ a ton of stuff.

  • When I was around 28 weeks pg I went to a MoMs sale and bought a bunch of clothes and I wished I hadn't.  In retrospect they were kind of overpriced considering I could buy new clothes with a kohls coupon for not much more, plus you can't return the clothes from the MoMs sale.   Although I bought stuff that was cute, not really practical for newborns.  Since you are not a new mom, you probably wouldn't make that mistake.   The things that I bought that I thought were a good deal - baby bjorn ($15), bumbo seat $12,  laugh and learn house $30, holiday bibs in good condition.

  • I didn't really start buying anything until my kids were 18 months - 2 years.  That's when I stocked up on clothing and such.  I still only spend about $100, and I'm usually in the market for holiday clothing, coats, costumes, etc.

  • My first sale I spent $70... the last two I have spent over $150.  I have bought their entire seasonal wardrobes.  Also I have bought toys and books.  The MoM group that I belong to is known for its quality clothing and good prices at its resale.
  • I only buy clothes these days at the sales. I spent $137 on over 40 items (shirts, pants, sets, etc.) at the last one.

  • I've only been to a MoM sale once, when they boys were babies the lineups were ridculously long and stuff had already been picked through so I would of been only able to buy 1 outfit instead of two...I was in contact with the organizer who told me if I joined I could have first dips before the general public has access, but from what I can remember I didn't find the clothes to be in excellent condition, but then again it could of been mostly the leftover since it had been going on for an hour or so before I was there.

I've had better luck with buying clothes from a MoM I know who had twin boys, she buys good quality clothes and takes care of it so I was able to snag some stuff, her prices weren't great, but they were good for what I got.  I also had a lady from my Church call me to tell me a lady on her street had a yardsale and she had twin boys so I bought stuff last year and this year I got her number and bought more stuff and her prices are good! I don't know if she's part of the MoM's group or not, but I told her I'd be calling her again next year to see if she has some clothes to sell! :)

We use kijiji mostly, I think the US it's mostly craiglist'? Either way you could always put an ad up for what you're looking for and you might get some responses and get better deals this way! :)

  • I think a lot of it is finding the right MoM's sale.  There are 3 or 4 MoM's groups in my metro area.  I joined the one with the largest number of members, rather than the one nearest me.  Our sale is Amazing!  Clothes are cheap and while not everything is in fabulous shape, we take great care in making sure things aren't stained (members are fined $1 per stained item).

I would think of the little things you might need.  Swaddles?  More receiving blankets?  Bottles?  Activity mats?  Bouncers?  Toys?  Sheets?

  • I just went to my first one last weekend.  I was there first thing when it opened (paid an extra $1 for the early bird time) and was able to get in and out quickly and only spent $30.  I got two pack and plays that are in awesome condition.  I had been going back and forth on whether I wanted to get any then decided I might as well.  I haven't bought clothes at all because we've had our shower and have still been receiving lots of gifts of clothing from friends and family.  The girls have a TON of clothes, all gifts!

  • Our last sale was pretty awesome. Most of the clothes I bought still had the tags on them.

Definitely at least check it out. You never know what you might find there.
