Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BFers - anyone get bit?

DS1 never bit me, but DS2 has started biting me on the regular :(  Like at least 10 times in the past few days.  One time he even broke the skin on me areola a little.  Now both nipples are incredibly sore and I'm jumpy and anxioius when feeding him.  I've been trying to pull him off as soon as he slows down actively sucking because that seems to be when I get bit most often (or before the milk starts flowing) but I'm worried my supply will suffer if I keep taking him off early.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • She has a few times. It seeme more like she was using my boob as a teether than tying to nurse but I ended the session. It was after she had eaten so the worked but I would end the session for like 5 min, sternly say no and attempt to relatch after a few min. I've heard babies quickly learn that if biting=no milk they stop biting. GL

  • Yep she's bit a few times.  I just acted hurt and made her wait a minute.

She's had teeth for 3 months and it very rarely has been a problem.  Most of the time she wants to eat as quickly as possible then squirm off my lap to play with something.  You shouldn't feel teeth as long as your LO's really feeding.

  • Timmy will bite if he is being nursed to sleep during a teething phase. I've just unmatched for 30 seconds or so, said no and then relatched. It's been happening less and less. Good luck!

  • Yes. And it hurts like hell. And whenever he bit, I pulled him away and told him no, that hurts mummy. I'd give him an opportunty to latch back on and drink more if he wanted but I soon came to find that he only bit if he was all done.

And on the subject, last week my nipples were as sore as they were when I first started bfing without a nipple shield because he now has two teeth on top and they were rubbing on the nipz every time he latched on. Saturday night I was nursing him to sleep and he was messing around and clamped down on my already raw nipple. I squealed and it scared the crap out of him :( After that he wouldn't latch again for an hour. Every time I tried to get him to drink, he'd look up at me and start sobbing again. So, lesson learned: don;t react too loudly!
