Baby Names

claire, anna or molly?

I only have a couple weeks to go, and still don't have my kid named. I'm desperate enough that I am now consulting internet strangers. Last name sounds like Campbell. I've narrowed it down to 3:

Claire- this is my top choice, but a couple people have made comments to me about alliterative names, and now I'm paranoid that Claire Campbell sounds stupid.

Molly- I love this name for little girl, but I'm not sure it fits an adult as well? I have a "little girl" first name, with no "adult" option (Think "Suzy" as my full name), and I don't want to do that to my kid.

Anna- I have always loved this name, but I'm just not feeling it in connection to my child the same way that I feel like Claire or Molly could be the name. I don't know if that makes sense.

Which name would you choose? Thank you so much for any feedback!

Re: claire, anna or molly?

  • If the alliteration doesn't bother you then go for Claire, it's a beautiful name.

I'm struggling with the same thing for Molly and Anna is also pretty.

  • Tough one. I love all three. Maybe you should just wait until you meet her and then decide. You might look at her and think, "wow, she is totally a _____."
  • I love Claire! (See siggy)  Anna is also lovely, but I know many little Annas and I have the only Claire...  (This might be different in your area, though!)

  • Anna is the most beautiful, IMO.

    Claire is my second choice.

I dislike Molly. Unless you name her Margaret or something so she can have a more formal name for her resume.

  • My first pick would be Anna. Love.

Second choice is Claire. Alliteration is bugging me less than it used to, and sometime I even love the way it sounds. Go figure. Claire is a lovely name.

A (very) distant third is Molly. I can't pinpoint it exactly, but I've always disliked this name. It's just... meh.

  • Really like all three. First choice - Anna. Second choice - Claire. Third choice - Molly. I think Molly could work as an adult.

  • I like Claire the best. I don't think Claire Campbell sounds bad at all. Maybe if the fn and ln both had the ca - ca sound it would bother me, but this doesn't at all.

  • Thank you all so much for your feedback! We are trying to keep the name secret till the baby is born, so I don't really have anyone except my husband to bounce ideas off of. It's really helpful to know how the names sound to other people. I'm thinking we'll narrow it down to Claire and Anna, and see which one feels right when we meet her.
  • I love all your name choices!  I think Claire sounds fine with something like Campbell.  My sister is Anna Claire, which I've always loved!  Also, I grew up with a Molly and it suits her just fine as a adult.  I second the pp who said to take the names to the hospital and decide when you see her.  That's what we did with DD and she definitely fit one name more than the other!

  • Claire is my favorite of the three but I think Molly would sound the best with your lastname.
  • They would make a great sibset! haha    Personally I Like Molly the best.  I think its a fine adult name.   Anna is pretty but runs into Campbell for me...  and the alliteration with Claire I don't love..
  • My niece is Molly, but my BIL didn't want her to have a "little girl name" for her given name.  Her given name is Mary Margaret.

  • Personally, I love all three. If we were having a girl her name would have been Claire. I love the alliteration that would create too, Claire Campbell. It just sounds perfect!

  • I think Claire Campbell sounds find. Two words do not make much of an alliteration IMO, and the syllables that have the offending "ck" sound have different -a sounds. I wouldn't worry about it; just go with the name you love.

  • I like them all. If you're really having trouble narrowing it down, use more than one- there are some great fn/mn combos in there!

    Molly Claire

Anna Claire (this is on our list as a double fn)

  • I am not a fan of Claire (it's a bit blah to me) but I think that it sounds fine with Campbell. I love Molly but agree with the previous posters about giving her a more formal name such as Margaret and then calling her Molly. I adore the name Anna - I think that it is beautiful and classic. Overall, you really can't go wrong with any of the names that you have chosen.

  • I really like Anna and Molly.  I'm not a big fan of Claire, but mostly just because of a personal association.  Based on what you said, though, I'd go with Claire...it sounds like it's your favorite.

  • I like Claire and don't mind the alliteration. Anna is second, Molly is third. I like Molly, but it is kiddish to me.

  • I love the name Claire. We've decided on Claire Campbell for our daughter's fn and mn. Our last name starts with an M, and Campbell is a family name. I really like the two names together.

I like Anna, too, but I know SO many women and little girls named Anna.

    Good luck!
