My son loves his choos choos too. He has a couple Thomas the Train sets. They are a little pricey, but good quality and should interest him for a long time. We found some deals on Ebay and scored some additional trains at a neighbor's garage sale. A lot of the sets seem to be compatible. We also have the Kidcraft train table with storage underneath that is great for the train set, leggos, blocks, etc.

FP GeoTrax. DS loves them. He can either push it on its own or use the remote. He got it for xmas last year and turned 2 in March he had no problem with the remote.
DS has 3 trains. Take and play Thomas, a wooden one that is made up of sets from IKEA, Kidcraft, and Thomas wooden (it is huge and can be set up a bunch of different ways, all the pieces work together for the most part), and GeoTrax. He likes the Geo Trax the best and it is the easest to set up and take down. It also stays together the best. My only complaint is that it is the least "imaginative". The wooden one is more like a puzzle, so I like for him to play with it more. If you get a wooden one, most work with the Thomas train cars, which DS definitely prefers over other brands.
DS got the Geo Trax set with remote when he was just over 2 & he's really enjoyed it. He's very tough on toys & it's holding up great. He also had no problems using the remote right away. He can't put it back together himself though...he takes it apart pretty much everyday & DH or I have to put it back together for him.
We got a little "figure 8" Melissa & Doug train set for DS for his 2nd birthday. We weren't sure how much he'd like a train set yet so we didn't go for the big Thomas set up right away since they're so pricey. Anyhow, he LOVES the thing and plays with it almost every day. So maybe for Christmas a few Thomas trains and tracks are a' coming...
We started my son off with the Early Engineer's Thomas sets & have since moved to the normal size ones my Son LOVES his trains & I really like how how most the sets work together.
Re: XP -Train set for toddler
We've created a collection for DS using the Thomas Wooden Railway line. He loves them and plays every day with them.
We wanted wood over plastic for durability. They can be pricey, but again, he plays with them EVERY DAY.
