Alternatives to cake for gender reveal.

Our anatomy scan is scheduled for Wednesday Nov 23. The day before American Thanksgiving. I want desperately to make some kind of treat to bring to Thanksgiving dinner with the whole family that will reveal the surprise, but I don't want to make cake (or cupcakes or cakeballs) because there will be quite a bit of pie already. So what kind of treat, dessert or otherwise, could or should I make? I thought maybe a pie, blueberry for boy and cherry for girl and then I don't even have to make it from scratch! LOL But I would love some suggestions.

  • I think the balloons in a box is a cute idea.  Get a giant box and put helium balloons in either pink or blue in it and then open it in front of everyone!

  • My cousin did cupcakes w/ blue filling and had everyone cut into theirs at once.

A friend of mine revealed the sex at Christmas. She wrapped all her family's gifts in traditional Christmas wrapping paper, but put pink bows on all of them. She just put them under the tree and waited until someone noticed!

  • It's probably too early for gingerbread but my friend made gingerbread girls since she was having a girl.  Had it been a boy they would have been gingerbread boys. :)
  • I love pie.
  • I'm doing my gender reveal at Thanksgiving too. Smile

I'm going to bring the pumpkin pie. In my family, we always put whipped cream on top of our pumpkin pie. So I am going to put red or blue food coloring in the whipped cream.

  • Or even better than pie (although maybe it's odd for T-giving, I don't know), you could get a cheesecake and then have either blueberry topping for a boy or cherry or raspberry for a girl. You can have a lid on the topping until it's time to serve so it's a nice surprise for everyone.

Cute! We will find out early Dec. I'm not sure if we are going to make a big deal out of it yet or just tell. But I like some of the ideas here.......kinda makes me want to do something.

That's a super cute idea.  Too bad we are telling everyone in our Christmas cards.  Because I would totally do this.

  • I can't do a big gender reveal. After waiting this long to announce the pregnancy, I'm just going to have to tell everyone the baby's sex as soon as I find out. I can't. keep. any. more. secrets!! lol

The gingerbread idea is really cute too.

  • I'm super allergic to balloons, so that idea would have me running from the room. Can't wait to deal with people always giving them to the kid.... Do you have cocktail hour before? You could make baked Brie en croute with either a cranberry or blueberry chutney inside. Or tuck those fruits in soda bread or biscuits. Pink champagne or blue moon toast? I say go with cake because I'm not a huge pie fan!

  • What do you think of Jello? I have a white I could make jello in then top it with whipped cream, so when they scoop it out they see it. That would be an easy dish that doesn't compete with the other desserts, right? I don't want to completely take over. (although everyone will know my u/s was the day before and they'll be chomping at the bit. LOL)

  • With our first two we just called people right after the appointment.  The only thing I did that was "cute" was that I brought cupcakes with pink frosting to work right after my appointment.  It's a good thing it wasn't a boy becuase they didn't have any with blue frosting!
  • I hate jello. But if people in your family like it, that sounds like an easy way to do it.

  • Being Southern, Ambrosia has been a must have at all Thanksgiving dinners.  I would probably make one and color it blue or pink.

HAHA, we didn't do anything fun the first time. We just called and posted on facebook.

I don't know if people like jello. I don't know if I've seen jello at any gatherings in the past, and of course now that I'm trying to remember, I can't. LOL

    Lol! too funny.

Tambcat, I'm with you. I haven't told ANYONE we're pregnant (we're telling everyone this and next weekend! woohoo!) so when it comes to gender revealing, I'm just gonna hafta blurt it out. Can't. Keep. My. Mouth. Shut. Any. Longer..... !!!

  • We are going to reveal around Christmas when we are with all the family,... but our plan is, when we go for the ultrasound to have the tech write boy or girl on a notecard and seal it in an envelope... so come reveal time it is a surprise for us too!  We'll probably have one of the little nieces or nephews read it outloud.
  • We have our ultrasound on the same day! Hopefully the baby cooperates so that we can tell everyone at Thanksgiving. We were thinking about bringing a pie with some type of pink or blue baby inside of it. Then everyone will have to look inside their piece to find out what it is. I found some little plastic pacifiers from Oriental Trading that might work.
