Ugh, BFing error in judgment

I've got 4 days coming up where I'm going to be away from N for an extended period of time (Wicked on Sunday - yay!!  And going into the office for 3 days the week after next - boo!!) so I started pumping once a day to have milk available for him.

I put him to bed around 8:30 and then pump around 11:30 before I go to bed.  It's been nice because when I wake up to feed him at 4 or 5 so I wasn't so engorged.  Until the last couple of nights.  He has been sleeping great lately - 10 hours last night! (I hope I don't jinx it :) so I'm back to being engorged a bit when he wakes up.  And that's after pumping before bed.  I can't imagine what I would feel like if I didn't pump then.  But therein lies my problem - by pumping I'm just signaling my body to make more.  And I don't know how to break the cycle!!  Help!!

(Pumping before bed is the most consistent time I can get a pumping session in since N's naps are still sort of all over the place - no real schedule.)

  • If he keeps sleeping the 10 hours your body will adjust. If you're waking up in pain, you can hand express a little to relieve the pain, but I wouldn't pump since it will only increase your supply then. When A started sleeping through the night I slept with burp cloths in my nursing tanks for a while. Eventually I stopped waking up with rock hard soaked boobs!

  • You'll adjust to his sleeping habits.  My DD has been STTN for almost two months and I'm just starting to wake up with less engorgement.

  • I would pump just enough to take the edge off the pain.  Just doing it for a few days should help.

Jelous of your 10 hour night!  How awesome!

  • So you think I should keep the pumping up before bed?  I was planning on stopping after I'm done with going into the office but maybe I should keep with it to build a stash?

ETA - haha "pumping up" :)  That should just be pumping.

Do you not pump as a norm?  Do you want a stash?

If you want to start up a decent stash I would continue pumping (maybe decrease the time you pump though).  I have a decent stash (about 350 oz) but we don't give her a bottle everyday...it's just an insurance policy that I can be a little more spontaneous about going out and not having to plan and stress over how much I'm able to pump before leaving her with someone.  I also plan on using it to make baby food instead of water.

  • I only pump once a day first thing in the morning. Rylee is a one side eater and that way I relieve all engorgement and I add to my stash since that's when your supply is highest. I'm only goi g to work 2 days a week but I like having frozen around for DH just in case I need to be out longer or something emergent comes up. I like the idea of using my stash for baby food though! Didn't know that was possible.

I don't normally pump.  I would like a small stash but I don't have a lot of freezer room.  N has had maybe 5-6 bottles ever.  There's really no need to give him bottles since I'm always home with him.  Interesting thought using it to make baby food!

  • Nothing to add here, but I just want to say I really wish I had your problem!! I do want to build my stash and I work, so I am pumping 3 times a day at work to give her enough for the next day.  Lately, I haven't even been getting enough from that and have had to add a session before bed, as you do, and then another one in the morning before I leave for work!  All this just to get the three 5 oz bottles she will need during the day...plus bfing when I'm home with her! argh! I just started taking fenugreek, and I hope I can get my bewbs in gear doubletime! So jealous when people only have to pump like twice a day to get 20 oz... ok, vent over. Sorry to hijack your post... Pizza

We don't either. I have a small gift bag with a small slit cut out of the side at the bottom. I just stack all of the milk bags up and then I can pull out the oldest from the bottom.
