Nurse to sleep- Need to Burp?

For our night feedings LO falls asleep after about 10-20 minutes of nursing. Sometimes I can tell he needs to be burped but other times he falls asleep peacefully and I don't want to wake him up to burp.  We typically bedshare after the first sleep block so there's no getting up and carrying him to the crib or anything, I just slide away from him.

Sometimes he will wake up fussing after an hour or so and he needs to either burp or fart, other times, he'll stay asleep for a few hours.

Do you ALWAYS burp your LO if you nurse him/her to sleep? Do you find burping him or her helps them sleep more comfortably?

Re: Nurse to sleep- Need to Burp?

  • I don't generally burp LO unless he is awake when he is done eating.  I tend to think that since he is nursing so calmly at night he must suck less air because he doesn't seem as gassy -- and for some reason waking him makes me nervous.  I think because I am not always sure if he'll fall back asleep.  He sometimes wakes fussing or gassy, but it doesn't seem to correlate to the times I do or don't burp him.

  • A almost always falls asleep while nursing during the night (she nurses 10 min at the most). She spits up a lot, so I always put her up to my shoulder to burp after feeding. However, if she doesn't burp on her own when I put her up there, she's not going to burp. I just make sure she is sleeping soundly and has been upright for a bit and then it's back to bed for her.

ETA: Wyatt is so stinkin' cute! After your post about him being almost too big for his Bumbo (I didn't get a chance to post in it), we took A to try one out. She's pretty much too big for it, too! Her poor legs wouldn't fit in there too long. We ended up buying this so she can sit up and play. Plus we can use it much longer than the Bumbo. Either way, your post helped me out a lot!

    Sorry for the hijack. :)

  • My LO is a hard burper but a spitup queen.
I gave up on burping her if she's asleep. A) I hate to wake her B) She. Just. Won't. Burp. Asleep.

YES! Someone had sent me the link to that summer infant seat and I just happened to go to a HUGE kids consignment sale and there was one there! I got it for Wyatt too :) Yup, the bumbo legs are really tight! But we still wedge him in and out of it so he can sit on the table whle we eat and be at our level. When I pick him up, DH has to peel the Bumbo off of his chubby legs :) I'm glad it helped! Adele is such a cutie pie!!!

  • you could always try to pat LO back gently while sleeping sometimes it works for my LO if I remember to burp him at all. I'm totally getting mother of the year award lol

  • I've been having an issue with my LO waking up 1-3 times after he's down for the night. When he does it, he wakes up very suddenly, crying. Sometimes he'll burp when I pick him up, and then he'll fall asleep again. So recently, I've been working a lot harder to make sure that he burps, and I can usually get it out of him even when he's asleep. I have to work really hard at it when he is asleep, and I end up doing a lot of repositioning him and dancing with him. I have found that sometimes the wake up is because he wants to eat one more time, so I don't know if it's actually related to the burping or not.

I guess this rambling post isn't really all that helpful because I'm not sure that I've got it resolved. He did stay asleep last night, though, so I might be on to something!

  • DS burps much easier when he is sleeping. I just pick him up onto myshoulder and bounce a little bit and he will burp. When he's awake he holds on to them. He's a gassy boy with a shallow latch, so I burp him often, lest he wake up screaming at me 30 minutes later.

  • I always put LO to my shoulder and gently pat his back and sometimes he burps and sometimes he doesn't.  He is usu asleep when he comes off the breast so he doesn't wake up at all.  He will rub his head into my collarbone a bit until he settles but in general, I pat his back for 3-4 minutes and then put him back down w/no problem.  I did this b/c he seemed to wake up if I didn't get him upright before laying him back down in the crib.

  • LO isn't really a spit-up baby, but she has been a little gassy lately.  Even if she's fallen asleep, I'll pat her back a little to see if I can get a burp out of her.  Half the time I can't, and she'll work it through with some fussing later, but sometimes I can and she'll sleep right through it.  I guess it's up to you to decide, since you know your LO, and whether he needs to be burped, better than we do.  =)

  • DD is not a good burper, so very often I lay her down either without trying to burp or without successfully burping. With DS that would never fly because he spit up like crazy. Unless you find it makes him uncomfortable I wouldn't worry.
